090520 VARIOUS AI Season 8 Finale recaps (snippets)
Claire Zulkey at the Onion's AV Club:
Next David Cook performed the song "Permanent" in honor of his dead brother, so I can't make a mean comment about his hair, but it was a sad, honest song, and I couldn't help but appreciate David as a singer and as a professional tonight. Proceeds of theiTunes download of the song will benefit "ABC Squared." David was also a class act about Kris and Adam, when Ryan did the Miss America-esque passing of the torch thing.

Daniel Feinberg atHitFix.com:
8:16 p.m. Bathed in a sickly green light, David Cook is the night's first guest performer, singing "Permanent." Do we assume the black band on his arm is for his brother? That'svery sad. He's also very good. I'd have watched an Adam Lambert/David Cook finale.8:18 p.m. Ryan brings up David's personal tragedy and David says that the performancewill go up on iTunes after the episode, with all proceeds going to ABC-Squared. My heart  goes out to the guy.

David Cook performed a haunting rendition of his song “Permanent.” See, if Adam Lambert had David Cook’s lower register in his arsenal, Kris wouldn’t have stood achance. David Cook was phenomenal tonight.

Last year's winner, former bartender David Cook, came back for a second time this season to show the kids how it's done, singing his lighter-flicking ballad "Permanent" asa tribute to his recently deceased older brother, Adam.

Michael Slezak, live blog, EW.com:
8:15 David Cook is here with "Permanent." How many singles is dude working  simultaneously?8:16 Oooh. I like hearing David's voice on something stripped-down and melodic. But  seriously, is he singing "make it go away" about the Swaybots who are threatening todestroy his performance. DAMN THESE SWAYBOTS! Just when you think they're gone, they come back, like rhythm-less fire ants.8:18 iTunes proceeds from "Permanent" downloads going to an organization looking for a cure for cancer. Sweet!

Last year’s winner, David Cook, brings the room down. Ballad time, dedicated no doubtto his brother.

How did i KNOW Ryan would bring up David Cook's brother. But that’s nice, proceedsfrom that song go to a charity.

8:17 - An excellent haunting ballad from David Cook. Kind of answers the question,"What if Creed didn't suck?" Though the chorus does recall the melody of "We Belong" by Pat Benatar. Seriously. Play them concurrently in two different Youtube windows if  you don't believe me.8:18 - So is David Cook some sort of perfect person or what? He couldn't have beenclassier talking about his brother following that performance.

The Wrap: Covering HollywoodThe first surprise of the night was a performance from last year’s winner David Cook. The second surprise was the tears that welled up once I listened to the lyrics of

“Permanent” and realized they were written for his brother, Adam, who succumbed to brain cancer just a few weeks ago.The evil iTunes/”Idol” empire has finally been used for the greater good, ya’ll! Cook announced that the proceeds for every iTunes download of “Permanent” would go toABC Squared, benefitting cancer research. Get out there and download, people! You canmake a difference!

EW:American Idol: On the scene for the finaleDavid Cook emerged. I now know the orange bracelet DC wears is a tribute to thedaughter of Fox News Tampa reporter Charley Belcher -- Charley made for an excellentcompanion during my marathon outside the Nokia this week -- and that DC's voice canstill make my heart leap. The high note he hit in that performance of "Permanent" movedme more than anything Glambert's wailed all season, and all of a sudden I found myself yearning for an American Idol: All Stars season, if only to see those two men go head tohead.

TopIdol, on Cook's inherent likability:
I guess there was a commercial or something, but now David Cook is there. And peopleare swaying. Cook is singing Permanent, which I believe is dedicated to his brother whorecently died after a 10-year battle with brain cancer. All proceeds from downloading the song will be donated to ABC2, a cancer charity. There is something I like about David Cook. I cant help it. Whatevia. Poor guy has someof the most bats*** crazy fans, but hey, I give him credit for trying to ellude them and their stalker tactics. I have hope for him, although I wonder if the black armband is a bit over-the-top? Well. I’m gonna cut him some slack since his brother just died. And frankly, I’ve just always kind of been rooting for David Cook to make it.
