It is not yet common to hear about the PIE or Public Interest Engineering. I wish to draw attention to this new reality in post-liberation Goa, pointing out to two close friends, who are no more. I am referring to engineers Urban Lobo and Sylvester D’Souza. Incidentally, both had family links with my native village of Moirá, and both lived as neighbours in Dona Paula.
Both have sown the PIE seeds, and hopefully not in vain. I wish that my raising this issue will provoke some reflection and public debate that could help to empower the Goan public to recognize its potential and cease to rely less upon the politicians to meet the needs of public welfare.
