AS level Film Studies-Production Planning: Location Report For my AS level Film Studies project

Location 1 Outside a hospital

The first location I selected is outside of King George hospital, which is located near Chadwell Heath. This location is ideal for my project because it connotes to the audience that something bad has/is about to happen. The location is quite ironic because the protagonist is surrounded by people and is outside a hospital but nobody interacts with him, this connotes to the audience that nobody can understand or help him. The location is easily accessible and I will not require permission, as I will only be filming from the outside of the hospital. One way I will be using cinematography is through the use of different shots in the scene, I plan to use an establishing shot to give the audience a view of the setting, this shot will then be followed by a mid-shot which will show the protagonist body language and then finally a close up to allow the audience to see the protagonists facial expression, hence creating a sense of tension and mystery, which tend to be common codes and conventions of a drama/social realist genres. This links with my textual analysis as it is quite clear that camera shots play a very important role in making the audience not only feel as though they are part of the film, but makes them feel more connected to the characters situation. For the lighting, I will make the scene quite dark to make the audience think that something sinister is about to happen. The scene will only contain non-diegetic sound; the non-diegetic sound will consist of dramatic/sad music to portray the protagonists emotions to the audience.

Location 2: Outside a local corner shop

Following the previous scene, the location changes from a hospital to a corner shop. This location is where the protagonists best friend will be; the location is ideal for the scene because it shows a contrast between the two scenes, this location allows me to use different kinds of shots and angles for my cinematography. I will use bright lighting in this scene to give the audience a better understand of the protagonists best friends personality. I will use a lot of close ups and extreme close ups because for the entire scene the protagonists best friend will be on the phone. The scene will include both diegetic and nondiegetic sound, most of the diegetic sound will be dialogue. I will also include synchronous sound (sirens) to connote to the audience that something dangerous is about to happen later on in my creative artefact. It is quite obvious

in my textual analysis that the different uses of sound can create different moods and ideas in the audiences minds.

Location 3: Estate

The third location I selected was an estate/neighbourhood which relates to my textual analysis because both of the films Im looking at include an area in which teenage protagonist hang around, the location is easily accessible. This location is where the protagonist will confront the antagonist; the cinematography will consist of a variety of different camera shots, movements and angle. For the shots I will use long shots, medium shots, close ups and extreme close ups. The angles will range from high angle to low angles and I will only incorporate one camera movement (panning). All the different aspects of cinematography will allow the audience to view the scene from different angles. For the sound I will use fast paced music as the protagonist enters the estate and the music will stop when he calls the antagonists name, this will help build up tension to the scene (this links to my textual analysis as it was technique used in Kidulthood during the final scene).
