Did you know that we think, speak and read at different speeds?
We can think at speeds of around 500 words per minute. However, most people converse at speeds of about 150 – 200 words per minute. During a presentation, a person speaks at arate of 120-150 words per minute. Speed readers claim toread at speeds up to 800 words per minute, but most of usread at rates below 200 words per minute.

How can this information help me as a teacher?
This is useful to know when giving a presentation. When a person presents, they speak more slowly (to ensure everyone canunderstand), but this gives the audience a lot of time to go on ‘mental walkabout’since the audience can think through the topic faster than the presenter can speak about it. Help keep the audience mentally engaged with extra information inhandouts and images in your PowerPoint slides.
