The effort you put in the selection of a Reiki master can go a long way in determining how successful you turn out to be in your endeavor to learn the Reiki healing system. To understand the importance of putting in proper effort in the selection of a Reiki master, it is important to first understand what Reiki itself is, and how it works.
Reiki is a Japanese traditional healing system, which works by the attunement of the body's natural energy; out of the understanding that it is the falling out of balance of this body's natural energy that leads to various illnesses, or 'injuries' as they are known in Reiki terminology. The system was developed about 80 years ago by a Japanese spiritual teacher after three weeks of an intensive retreat, and out of what the master described as a mystical revelation. And if the growing popularity of Reiki in many parts of the world is anything to go by, then it is highly probable that the system is indeed highly effective in the treatment of various illnesses.
Reiki is something that you have to be taught by a master - which is to say (conversely) that Reiki is not something you may teach yourself. To understand the importance of this, you need to take into consideration that the healing properties of Reiki are a direct result of energy attunements, and these attunements can only be conferred to practitioners by Reiki masters, the Reiki masters themselves being people who have attained the third degree of Reiki training.
As there is no standardization or regulatory body in charge of Reiki training, it follows that your personal judgment will be of great import in the choice you finally make. The ideal Reiki master can be described as a person who is pleasant to work with, a person with a passion for the Reiki practice and a person with some experience in Reiki practice.
With regard to being a person who is pleasant to work with, it turns out that if you go for a master who is hard to relate with you are almost certainly bound to have problems asking your master the questions that you are bound to get somewhere along the line, as the finer nuances of Reiki can be a bit hard for the beginner to get a good hold of. But then of course, you must not resort to judging the pleasantness of a Reiki master by just looking at external appearances, as some Reiki masters who look foreboding can often to out to be very pleasant to work with, and very well grounded in their Reiki practices.
For a person who has a passion for Reiki healing and a person who has experience in the same, this will prove to be important in your Reiki master's choice as only a person who has real-life practice experience of Reiki can answer the complex questions that may come up on the training road once the basics of Reiki healing (which are very easy to get a hold of) are cleared with.
