CHAPTER ONE
TASHA LARSEN thrust her way through the swing doors leading to the hospital's emergency room and strode down the corridor to the desk, her raincoat flapping like wings ehind her! She was uncomfortaly wet ecause her ca had een caught in "en#er's hea#y traffic, and she had aandoned it to walk the last few locks!$% was told my sister was rought here! Name of Larsen,' she declared coolly, glad that her demeanour of composed assurance&which stood her in such good stead in the courtroom&hid the anious eat of her heart! The usually unflappale clerk ehind the desk did a doule(take, seemed aout to make a remark and then, catching sight of Tasha's epression, thought etter of it!$)ou*ll find her in %+! Take the ele#ator to the sith floor!'%+- "ear .od/ 0hy hadn't she een told that it was that serious- Telling herself not to think the worst, Tasha headed for the ele#ator&oli#ious to the emused stare of the clerk! 0hen the doors opened on the upper floor she stepped out and looked around! There didn't seem to e anyody to ask, ut she was used to making 1uick decisions and unhesitatingly turned right! .lancing into rooms as she went, she caught sight of a figure she knew and hurried inside!2ar from eing motionless in a ed, her sister was pacing up and down the small waiting(room!$0hen they said you were in %+ % epected to find you adly in3ured,'  Tasha oser#ed tautly!$"isappointed-* Her sister sent her a mocking look from eyes the same colour as Tasha's own!%n fact, e#erything aout them was the same for Natalya and Natasha Larsen were twenty(se#en(year(old identical twins! They were 1uite reathtakingly eautiful, with eyes of so deep a lue they were almost #iolet and ones so fine they appeared fragile! Their skin was like porcelain, contrasting magnificently with the lack sheen of their hair! 4oth were tall, willowy and etremely femininely cur#ed!

The only oser#ale difference etween them was that Natasha&Tasha for short&had her hair styled in a o which cur#ed into her neck! The really important differences didn't show! 4ecause of them, the sisters had had a parting of the ways a long time ago!Natalya was an eceptionally good 5A ut she used her looks to get what she wanted, rather than her rain! 6en, she claimed, thought with a different part of their anatomy and could e controlled y it, getting her the good things in life 1uickly!4y contrast, Tasha found that her looks worked against her in her work as a lawyer! She had to work douly hard to con#ince people that she was more than a pretty face!"espite the fact that they rarely saw each other&Natalya*s choice, not hers&Tasha still cared aout her sister! She was all the family she had!$)ou seem all right,' she said drily!$All right-' Natalya s1uawked! $Look at that! %'ll e scarred! % 3ust know % will/' she eclaimed, pointing to a tiny cut on her left cheek which had een cleaned and clearly didn't re1uire stitches!0ith the ease of long practice, Tasha ignored her sister's eclamation and sought information! $0hat happened- All the patrolman said was that there had een an accident!' She recalled that moment of sick dread when she'd thought that she might ha#e lost her only family! 7rphaned since they were aies, there had only e#er een the two of them&which was why Tasha still clung to the last threads of their relationship!4latantly ignoring the no(smoking sign, Natalya lit a cigarette and puffed away for se#eral seconds efore answering! $.od, it was awful! % thought % was going to die! A car went out of control as we were lea#ing the restaurant! %t mounted the sidewalk and headed straight for us! +hase pushed me out of the way, ut the car caught him! % hit the wall and got this/' 7nce again she indicated the tiny gra8e! Tasha told herself not to e annoyed y her sister's self(asorption! %f she wanted to know more she had to play it canny! $+hase-*Natalya lew out smoke and studied it intently! $+hase +alder!' Tasha caught her reath sharply! $+hase +alder, the lawyer-' she said

diselie#ingly and, when her sister nodded, Tasha's eyes widened! She had heard of him! 0ho in the legal profession hadn't- His reputation as a trial lawyer was second to none! The man was a li#ing legend at the age of thirty(four! $How on earth did you meet him-*'He came into the health clu % use one day! 0e got talking! He was on a case, ut it's finished now! % suppose you might as well know! 0e got engaged tonight,' she informed her sister casually!Engaged- To say that Tasha was stunned was an understatement! She hadn't e#en known that +hase +alder was in "en#er, and now she disco#ered that he was engaged to her sister! Engaged! She had ne#er thought it would happen! She was so used to Natalya using men that it hadn't occurred to her that she might actually fall in lo#e with one! )et clearly she had! That it should e +hase +alder who had rought aout the miracle was something of a surprise, ut strange things did happen! She stared at her sister, trying to imagine the aniety Natalya was going through! %t must e awful! That put a different compleion on her eha#iour! Stress made people act in different ways! Her sister was clearly hiding hers ehind a show of indifference! Tasha's heart softened! $How is he-' she asked gently! Her sister stued out her cigarette and picked up her coat! $+ome and see for yourself!'She led the way net door to where +hase +alder lay in a hospital ed, almost hidden ehind the array of monitors to which he was hitched up! All Tasha could see was that he had dark hair and was dreadfully pale! %t occurred to her that she had ne#er actually seen a picture of him, and had no idea what he looked like!$Ha#e his relati#es een notified-' Tasha asked in concern! %f this man had een her son or rother then she would ha#e wanted to know if he had een in3ured in an accident!$Lord, don't ask me! %'#e got other things on my mind! They'#e 3ust rought him ack from the operating(room!' Natalya shuddered! $%t*s touch and go whether he li#es and, e#en if he does, chances are he's going to e a cripple/'
