North Carolina State University MA 114: Introduction to Finite Mathematics with Applications Summer Session 1 2012 9:50 - 11:20am

MTWHF Riddick 315

Instructor: Rohit Sivaprasad Email: rsivapr@ncsu.edu Website: http://www4.ncsu.edu/ rsivapr/ Oce Hours: 11:30 am -12:30 pm Tuesday + Thursday or by appointment. Textbook: Finite Mathematics and its Applications, 10th ed. by Golstein, Schneider and Siegel (available at NCSU Bookstore), published by Pearson (Prentice Hall). Used copies are okay. See the Homework section below for more information regarding your textbook purchasing options. Grade Policy: Your grade will be determined by the following break down: 4 In-Class Tests: 45% (15% each of the three best scores) Homework: 15% Quizzes: 15% (three of the highest scores will be picked) Class Participation: 5% Final: 20% The individual tests will not be curved, instead the Final grade for the class will be curved. Course Objectives: Elementary matrix algebra including arithmetic operations, inverses, and systems of equations; introduction to linear programming including simplex method; sets and counting techniques, elementary probability including conditional probability; Markov chains; applications in the behavioral, managerial and biological sciences. Computer use for completion of assignments. Homework: Homework will be assigned, submitted, and graded online via the MyMathLab homework client, a system developed by the publisher in conjunction with our textbook (you may know that most math courses use WebAssign; this course recently switched to MyMathLab because of the enlightening help menu and examples available to you). Assignments will be given and due periodically (the due dates and specic assignments will be determined as we progress throughout the semester). I will announce them in class, but its a good idea to check MyMathLab daily to see what new assignments are open to you. Also, this system can be accessed via any (suciently modern) web browser and internet connection (that is, use of NCSU facilities is not required). You must register and pay for the use of MyMathLab. You have options in this regard: 1. You can buy a new textbook from the bookstore - shrinkwrapped, and complete with an access code that allows you to get on MyMathLab. Doing this adds about $8 to the cost of a new book, and is therefore the most economical way for students who were going to buy a new book anyway (the bookstore website prices a new book at $156.90).

Subject to change. Updated version will be available from the class page.

2. You can buy a used book and then buy the access code independently. However, the access code then costs around $80. Depending on how cheaply you can get the used book, this may appeal to you. 3. Since MyMathLab access comes with a fully accessible e-version of the textbook (thus, the high price tag for the access code), you can opt to buy no book at all and just buy MyMathLab access for the $80 price tag mentioned above. In this option, there is nothing to sell back at the end of the semester and you only have access to the book when online (I always prefer hard copies of textbooks, in addition to soft copies). Academic Honesty: Students are required to follow NCSU policy available at http : //www.ncsu.edu/provost/academic regulations/integrity/reg.htm Academic dishonesty is the giving, taking, or presenting of information or material by a student that unethically or fraudulently aids oneself or another on any work which is to be considered in the determination of a grade or the completion of academic requirements or the enhancement of that students record or academic career. (NCSU Code of Student Conduct) Disability Services: Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with veriable disabilities. In order to take advantage of accommodations, students must register with Disability Services for Students at 1900 Student Health Center, Campus Box 7509, 919-515-7653. For more information on NC States policy on working wih students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulations (REG02.20.1). You must meet with me to discuss accommodations prior to a test date Extra Help Opportunities: 1. Study groups with other students 2. My oce hours 3. Free drop-in tutoring at the Multimedia Center in SAS 2105. 4. Tutors for hire (see http://www.math.ncsu.edu/mmc/tutorinfo.php for more details).
