The Weekly Spelling Plan
To meet California Standards for Writing Conventions, I have adopted a two-prongapproach to Spelling. As fourth grade students, you will be held accountable for spellingcorrectly all the high frequency words we practice
.
In addition, each week you will have achance to study spelling patterns. These spelling patterns and general spelling rules will beof value as you prepare for writing in both middle and high school. During the week, you willwork with words that follow a certain spelling pattern. You will have a chance, through avariety of activities, to use these words, explore them, think about them, and hopefully, learn the spelling rule. A typical week should include the following activities:
MondayClass work:
You will be introduced to the week’s “spelling pattern”words as you sort them with the teacher and record them on theWord Work at Home sheet.
Homework:
You should sort the “spelling pattern” words on your ownand record the sort on a separate sheet of paper.
Parents shouldcheck the word sort for spelling errors.

TuesdayHomework:
You should sort your words, recording the sort on a pieceof paper.
Parents should check the word sort for spelling errors.
In addition, you must add at least three words that follow the patternto each column of your sort. (You will be asked to record some ofthese words on your test on Friday.)
WednesdayHomework:
Students should work with a parent or sibling to sorttheir words again, using the “no-peeking” sort.
Parents should checkthe word sort for spelling errors.ThursdayHomework:
Students should take a practice test at home.
Incorrectwords should be practiced.FridaySpelling Celebration of Learning:
You will be expected to write your“Spelling pattern” words under the correct categories as your teacherreads them aloud. In addition, you will be asked to add at least oneother word to each column to show you have mastered the spellingrule. Sometimes the teacher will provide these additional words;sometimes you will be asked to write words that you have found.Note: Provisions will be made for struggling spellers on an “as needed”basis.
