WHAT YOU NEEDTO KNOW ABOUTCORIAN
®
MATERIAL
Material and its properties
Corian
®
is a solid, homogenous and massive material(weight 1m
2
 /22kg) with evenly distributed colour andtexture in cross-section. This material is exceptionallyresistant and durable. It proves very good mechanicalproperties such as hardness, toughness, abrasionresistance and tenacity. Scratches and nicks canbe simply removed by regrinding and repolishingwithout any change or homogeneity of colouredsurface. Corian
®
cannot be chopped or shatteredand it is not fragile, however, it must be braced toprevent any sagging. It is frameless only in caseof being glued together into a favourable shape.Depending on application, steel, stainless steel or
aluminium profiles, humidityproof MDF boards, plywood
or DTD, plasterboard or Perspex boards are used. Inkitchen surfaces, frame construction and partial bracingis recommended because of heat removal.
Manufacturing
Corian
®
is produced in form of boards and it is treatedin the same way as hardwood (saw, grind, glue, mill), itis also possible to bend and shape it into closed circlesand 2D and 3D objects can be created from it. Minimalshaped radius of material 12,3mm thick is 100mm.Warning: darker colours and smaller radius can cause„turning white“.
Patterns
By means of joint technology we can create logos,mosaics and marquetries with diverse colours withoutany obvious joints between the colours. Corian
®
can bewell combined with wood, glass and metal. With the useof heat, photos, letterings, etc. can be sublimated intothe Corian
®
surface.
Transillumination
Bright colour hues in weaker thickness (i.e. 6mm)
can be sufficiently transilluminated, which makes
the impression of subject’s levitation in the space.Or into the material of thickness 12,3mm we can millany ornaments, letterings, logos which will come forthand shine thanks to this. Moreover, special set ofcolours was developed designed particularly for easytransillumination; these colours, marked ICE, enableperfect transillumination across the board.
Dilatation
Furthermore, different thermal expansion must be
expected for Corian
®
and bracing materials andconstructions, i.e. though surface of any size withoutjoints can be produced, dilatation between Corian
®
andconstruction must be provided.
UV radiation resistance
Corian
®
is colour fast, resistant to sunshine and other
climatic influences, so it is possible to use it in exterioras well (frontage facing, banks). Yet long-term influence
of acid rains, extremely strong sunshine, thin layer ofdust or algae can cause a slight fading out of colours onthe surface. These changes however can be prevented ifregular maintenance by workers with special equipmentis done.
Non-porous surface
Thanks to compact and non-porous material withoutjoints, all liquids remain on the surface, therefore theboard is easily cleaned and ideal hygienic conditionsare ensured. This enables us to use it in laboratoriesand hospitals. Also viruses can be cleaned awayand radioactive substances can be decontaminated.Nevertheless, take special care with strong acids(concentrated sulphuric acid), ketones (acetone) andchlorinated solvents (chloroform). These can causea change in surface colour. This can be repaired byregrinding or cutting the damaged part out and gluinga new part in.
Heat resistance
Corian
®
withstands long-term temperature up to 180˚C,short-term temperature up to 360˚C, depending on the
heat source size and thermal variation between the
site of heat and surroundings. For example a cigarette
which can have more degrees is a very small site andcan only cause a very small area turning yellow whichcan be easily removed by abrasive detergent and a smallsponge with Scotch Brite layer.
Fire endurance
Material flammability is categorized as B1, which is
very important for application into school buildings,hospitals, hotels, airport lounges and railway stations.Corian
®
is neutral and non-toxic material. Under normalthermal conditions it does not radiate any gases. When
on fire, it releases carbonic gases and smoke that is
optically bright and does not contain toxins.
Suitable colour hue choice
Hues particularly marked in the DuPont
™
company colourbox are not suitable for extremely stressed surfaces,because these hues contain a large amount of pigment;hence the attrition and abrasion are far more obvious.
Shaped pieces (sinks and washbasins)
Beside boards, DuPont
™
also produces casted shapedpieces whose outstanding feature is great solidity,endurance and heat resistance which is far morehigher than shaped pieces manufactured by gluing andpressing according to individual design.
Lifetime
Material’s endurance and lifetime is not limited.Guarantee offered by the processor awarded with
