CHAPTER1INTRODUCTION
1. Purpose and Scopea. This
manual is B guide for commanders andinstructor in presenting instruction in the’me-chanical operation of the Ml4 and M14E2 rifleaIt include+ B detailed description of the rifle andits general chuactaristics; procedures for detaileddisassembly and assembly; an explanation of func-tioning; a discussion of the types of stoppages andthe immediate action applied to reduce them; a de-scription of the ammunition; and instructions onthe care, cleaning, and handling of each weaponand its ammunition.

Marksmanship training is wwxed in FM 23-71 and FM 23-16.c. The material contained herein is applicablewithout modification to both nuclear and nonnu-clear warfare.d. Users of this manual are encouraged to sub-mit recommended changes or comments to improvethe publication. Comments should be keyed tothe specific page, paragraph, and line of the text

s the Infantrymans basic weapon. Itgives him an individual and powerful capabilityfor combat. To benefit the most from this caps;bility, the Infantryman must develop two skills toan equal degree: he must be able to fire his weaponwell enough to get hits on battlefield targets, andhe must lmow enough about its working parts tokeep it operating. The Infantryman attains hisfiring skill in mwksmanship training.He learnshow to keep his rifle in operable condition throughmechanical training.3.

(1) The U.S. rifle, 7.62mm, Ml4 (fig. 1) isB lightweight, air-cooled, ga+opsrated,magazine-fed, shoulder weapon. It is de-signed primarily for semiautomatic fire.(2) When employed as an automatic rifle, theselector and biped hi2 must be installed(fig. 2).(3) The flash suppressor is designed with awide rib on the bottom to reduce muzzleclimb and t.he amount of dust raised bymuzzle blast.

(4) The lug on the rear of the flash suppins-sor is used to secure a bayonet, B grenadelauncher, and B blank firing attachment.(5) The spindle valve is used when launchinga grenade to prevent gas operation of therifle, thus avoiding damage to the weapon.
b. Ml.&% RijEe.
(1) The U.S. rifle, 7.62mm, M14E2 (Iig. 3)is an air-cuoled, gas-operated, magazine-fed, shoulder weapon. It is capable ofsemiautomatic or automatic fire; how-ever, it is designed primarily for auto-matic fire.It features a stabilizer assem-bly, modified bipod, front and rear hand-grip, straight line stock, and & rubberrecoil pad.(2) The M14E2 stock group is the straightline” type with a fixed rear handgrip anda folding front hsnderin which lies flatalong the bottom of the stock when notin use.The location of the front hand-grip csn be adjusted to one of five posi-tions in l-inch increments to wxommo-date all gunnersThe rubber reooil padreduces the effects of recoil.The hingedshoulder rest provides vertical control ofthe butt end of the rifle.The butt swivelpivots 26” to the left for ease of carrying.The stabilizer assembly consists of a per-forated steel sleeve which slides over theflash suppressor and is fastened to themuzzle over the bayonet lug by a screwand 8 locknut. The stabilizer providesmuzzle stability and reduces recoil.SELECTOR
