Fairfax County Needs Election Officers
On Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2013, Fairfax County will be voting for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, House of Delegates and Sheriff, as well as on a School Bond. I am a neighbor, I live on Acorn Circle. I have worked as a volunteer for many elections in Fairfax County (national, state, and local elections). For the November 5 Election Day, I have been asked to serve as chief for the Stenwood Precinct and I am writing to ask you to consider serving with me as an election officer. (Our County wants to ensure smooth functioning of the election process and thus is trying to place 8-10 Election Officers in each of the countys 238 Precincts -- we are hundreds short for the upcoming 2013 election season.) Serving as an Election Officer is a great opportunity to see the democratic process first hand. Your assistance on Election Day is critical to the success of the electoral process. Fairfax County is a diverse county, in order to encourage everyone to participate in the election process, we are especially in need of bilingual election officers (who speak, read and write English). You may choose to volunteer or accept a stipend - $175 for a full day. What are the requirements to serve as an Election Officer? You must be a registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia but you are not required to live in Fairfax County Enjoy meeting new people and serving the public Able to work at least half of the Election Day limited half day shifts are available in each precinct Attend a 3 hour training class Have basic computer skills The typical day entails arriving one hour before polls open (5:00 am) to set up voting machines, hang up signs and instructions about the election inside and outside of our precinct, and ready the polling room. Then once the polls open (6:00 am), to process voters, assist with voting machines and finally, tabulate our precincts voting results, secure the machines and close down the polling place at the end of the day. An application and information is available at the countys website: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections Or call 703-324-4735 or email: elect@fairfaxcounty.gov Looking forward to seeing you on Election Day.
