Ifthereisaheavenonearth,itiscertainlyVasishtaGuha.Guhameansacave.ThisVasishtaGuhaAshram(referredtoasthe'TheGuha'inthesubsequentparas)issituatedat22kms.fromRishikeshonthefamousBusroutetoBadrinath/Kedarnath(6kms.fromShivPuriwheretherearealotofraftinginstitutions,and10kmsbeforereachingByasi).IntheHimalayas,thenamesofmanyofthecavesarelinkedwithsomerenownedsageorotherofyoree.g.VyasaGuha,UddalakaGuha.Vasishtaisoneofthesaptarshis(7sages)andoneofthefirstcreationsofLordBrahma(thecreator)outofhiswillpower.Hewasthechiefpriest(KulaGuru)ofthelineofkingsclaimingtheirdescendencefromtheSunGod(SuryaVansa),themostfamousinthatlinebeingkingSriRam(RAMACHANDRA)-anincarnationofLordVishnu.Vasishta'sonehundredsonswere.killedduetothemachinationsofhiscompetitorSageViswamitrathroughtheapplicationofblackmagicrituals.Thoughahighlyevolvedsoulwellestablishedinthesupremeconsciousness(Brahman),thetragedyofthedeathofallhishundredsonswastoodeepablowtobebornewithequanimity.Vasishta,infrustationdecidedtoendhislifebyjumpingintoariver.TheRivergoddessdidnotwanttoincurtheheinoussinofbeingthecauseofthedeathofsuchaholysageandsojustcarriedhimsafelyunharmedanddepositedhimontheotherbankwhereArundhati,thewifeofVasishta,wasalreadywaitingforherhusband.AsArundhatithoughtthatiftheycontinuedtostayinthatenvironment,thememoriesoftheirdeadchildrenwouldhauntthem,suggestedgoingo~apilgrimagetothesouthernpartofIndia.Enroute,presumably,thisVasishtaGuhawasoneoftheplaceswherehecampedforperformanceofausterities(Tapas)forafewhundredyears(Vasishtawasasagewhoremainedasthechiefpriestformorethanfivegenerationsofkingseachofwhomruledforseveralthousandsofyears).TheGuhaissituatedonthebanksoftheholyriverGangaabout

feetbelowfromthemainroadanditisbarelyafiveminuteswalktoArundhatiGuha,accesstowhichisbywalkingovertheGanga'ssandbeach.SimilarVasishtaAshramsexistinvariousplaces(i.e.B.R.HILLSinKarnataka,inSRILANKAetc.)Whoknowshowmanysaints,sagesandSiddhashavelivedinthiscaveandaddedtoitsglory,holinessandspiritualvibrations!BehindtheSivalingaatthefarendofthecavecanbeseenaslightlyverticallyinclinedopeningintothecave.Ifyouputyourhandinit,youwillfindinsideitisclosed.Itseemsthecaveusedtoextendinsideforanother20kmsorsotill
 
aplacecalledGhantaKarnaMandirupintheHimalayas.Afewyearsbackthispassagewasclosed.ItisbelievedthatanumberofHimalayanadepts(SIDDHAS)havebeendoingausteritiesintheirsubtlebody(notvisibletonakedeyesofcommonpeople)insidethebackofthecaveforthousandsofyears.Besides,ourGurudevSwamiPurushottamanandjiMaharajalsohaddonehisausteritiesheresince1928.HewasagranddiscipleofSriRamakrishnaParamahansaanddiscipleofSwamiBrahmananda.Manyvisitors,notonlyIndiansbutforeignerstoo,whousedtositinsidethecaveinmeditationinreCenttimes,claimedtohavehadvariedpsychicexperiences.

April1996,aletterwasreceivedinthisAshramfromH.H.SwamiDayanandaSaraswatijiofinternationalfame,enclosingtwocopiesofaphotographofthecavetakenathisbehestduringhisrecentvisitthereto.ItseemsthatwhenthephotographofthefarendplatformcontainingSivaLingawastakenandgotdevelopeditwasfoundthatthereweretworaysoflightemanatingfromthetop/sideoftheSivaLingaandgoingoverthesidewallsandceilingtillitdisappearedintotheearthhalfwayfromthecaveentrance.ItcouldhaverepresentedtheultimatemergE1rofoneormoreoftheunseenSiddhasintotheSupremebeing.WhenBhagavanRamanaMaharshilefthismortalbodyatTiruvannamalai,atthatverymomentmanywereabletoseeindifferentcitiesabrightstar-likeflamecoursingthroughtheskyandthiswasreportedinsomenewspaperstoo.ManyhaveexpressedthatwhenoncetheysitinsidetheGuhaformeditation,theirlevelofconsciousnessimmediatelyrisesuptosuchahighlevelwhichtheywereabletoreachonlyoccasionallyandthattooafteryearsofspiritualpractice.Twootherincidentswhichhavebeenincludedinabook"FragrantFlowers"arereproducedbelowtoillustratethegloryoftheGuha:-(i)Sometimein1994orso,ayoungDutchwomanvisitedtheGuhaonadaywhenI(SwamiShantananda)happenedtobethere.Itwasherfirstvisit.Shewassittinginmeditationinsidethecavetilllunchtime.Duringlunchshesuddenlyaddressedmeandasked"IfindthatyourGurudevhadlefthisbodyinFeb.1961.Sincethen,haveyoumethimagainatanytime?".ThequestionsoundedstrangeandIansweredinthenegative.AfterfinishingherlunchshefollowedmetomyroomandnarratedthefollowinguniqueexperienceofhersintheGuha:-"Afterabouttwohoursofmeditation,whenIsuddenlyopenedmyeyes,IsawaSwamijiwithalaughingfacestandingbeforeme.Hewasidenticalwiththephotographkeptoutsidethecaveinthedais.Theonlydifferencewasthatunlikeinthepicturehehadalongstickinhishand.AthoughtcometcYmymindthatthevisionwassomesortofan

illusion.TheSwamijismilinglytoldme'youarewrong,mydearchild.Iamasrealasyouare.Iamnotanillusion."Iwasastonishedthathecoulddivinemythoughtsaccurately.Heaskedme"Aye,whatdoyouwant?"Ireplied'Swamiji,IwantGyan(TrueKnowledge)!'Helaughedinawildmanneranddisappeared.IbelievedherbecauseinhernarrationshehasmentionedcertaintypicalcharacteristicsofmyGurudevasfollows:-1.MyGurudevoftensportedalongstickeventhoughinthepictureonthedaisitwasnotthere.2.Histypicalquestiontomanyvisitorsordiscipleswas:-"Aye,whatdoyouwant?"3.Healwaysusedtobelaughinglikeachild.(ii)In1980,whenI(SwamiShantananda)hadgonetoVasishtaGuhatoattendmyGuruDev'sbirthdayasalsotodoSrimadBhagavataSaptaham,oneMrsP.hadalsocometotheGuha.OnthefirstdayofBhagavatareadinginthemorning,MrsP.didnotattendtherecitationpartlyperhapsshehadnotasteforitandcouldnotalsounderstandthesanskrittext.Shewentandsatinsidethecaveformeditation.Afterawhile,whensheopenedhereyes,shesawourGurudevstandingbeforeherwithasmile.Shewouldnotbelieveherowneyes.Hetoldher"yes,Iamreallystandingbeforeyoubutyouwillnotbelieve.Todayoneoldex-armymanwithabeardwillbevisitingGuhaforthefirsttimebuthewillrefusetohavelunchhereintheAshramandwillgoback.Whenthishappens,youwillbelieveinthisvision.TomorrowIshallinitiateyouwithamantra."MrsP.neverdisclosedthistoanybody.IntheeveningwhenIsawherfacefullofmisery,Iaskedherforthereason.Thenshenarratedtheincidentandtoldme'TodayIhavenotseenanysucholdex-armymanvisitingthisGuha.Perhapsitwasallmyimagination."ThenIexclaimed"No,itistrue.Todayoneoldex-
