25th ANNUAL SCYA WOMENS SAILING CONVENTION

The Southern California Yachting Association, will hold its 25th Annual Womens Sailing
Convention on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, Corona del Mar.
Primary sponsor is BoatU.S. This event is open to all women interested in sailing from novice /
beginner to expert.
The event maintains its multi-workshop format: Attendees select a combination workshops in
areas that best fits their interest and ability, such as: Welcome Aboard (for beginners), Diesels,
Going Up the Mast, Introduction to Racing, Tactics, Docking, Overboard Procedures, Suddenly
Singlehanded Interactive, Weather, Sail Trim, Basic Navigation, Maintenance Mania, DIY Canvas
Projects, How to Heave a Line, Nighttime Sailing & Navigation, Hassel-Free Heads, Spinnaker
Rigging, Offshore Cruising, and Introduction to Sailing. The WSC Regatta & Race Starts (BCYC) will
be held in Harbor 20s. All 30 of the workshops are presented by top women sailors from all over
Southern California, many of whom are USCG Licensed Captains.
To top off the event in the evening, the organizing committee has selected the speaker for the
25th Anniversary event to be Gail Hine, the founder and producer of all the Womens Sailing
Conventions since its inception in 1990. Gail has been a leader of the sailing community
throughout Southern California for the past 40 years, and a special mentor to womens sailing
groups. Her list of achievements is lengthy, but the highlights include being the first to receive
the Peggy Slater Award, the first female SCYA Director and then Commodore, Commodore of
the Redondo Beach YC, President of the Recreational Boaters of California, ASMBYCs and BCYCs
Yachtsman of the Year and the recipient of the NWSA and BoatU.S.s Leadership in Womens
Sailing Award. In addition to this, Gail owns and operates her own advertising agency and
graphic design business TeamWay Marketing and Design.
According to producer/director Gail Hine, This event gives women an opportunity to meet many
other women sailors, find out about existing womens sailing organizations in their area,
instructional programs available, and many other areas of interest for those who would like to do
more racing, cruising and day sailing. We have something meaningful for everyone. For those
who are already involved but desire more, we will offer some new areas of inspiration and
instruction along with excellent networking opportunities. Attendees have reported that this
convention was one of their most rewarding boating experiences and the very best-organized

event they have ever attended. Its a sell-out every year. Rain will not cancel or diminish this
event.

Here is background on Gail Hine


Skippering for the past 44 years, with a passion for racing on her 24-ft sloop, HUMMER (with a
excellent performance record), Gail has been a leading force in promoting womens sailing for many,
many years. She began these efforts in 1975 with a six-seminar per year Womens Instructional
Sailing Program at Redondo Beach YC which she organized for the next 9 years.
She was the first woman to attain a number of positions and awards in the Southern California
yachting community an SCYA director, the first recipient of the Peggy Slater Award in 1990,
Commodore of Redondo Beach YC (1980-81), President of Recreational Boaters of California (1994),
WSAs Marilyn Butefish Award, SCYAs Warren Ewert Trophy, ASMBYCs Yachtsman of the Year,
the Pacific Coast Yachting Associations Charles A. Langlais Trophy, SCYAs 1998 James Webster
Trophy for outstanding contributions to the yachting community, and BCYCs Newport Yachtsman of
the Year in 1998 and 2002. She has spearheaded the SCYA Womens Sailing Committee for the past
26 years. Gail conceived, created and produced all 25 of these annual Conventions, and they now
have national awareness and a couple of clonesin Alameda CA , Marblehead MA and Milwaukee,
WI. In 1998, she served as Commodore of Southern California Yachting Association (the
organizations second female Commodore).
In the spring of 2001, the National Womens Sailing Association, then based in Mt. Myers,
Florida [now in Marblehead, MA], asked Gail to become a member of their Board of Directors. NWSA

and BoatU.S., co-sponsors of the national Leadership in Womens Sailing Award, selected Gail as
their 2002 recipient. The Award is given to a person (male or female) who has a record of
achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing. In 2006 US
SAILING presented the SCYA Womens Sailing Convention their Community Sailing Program More
than 10 Years of Hallmark Performance Award.
She continues as a Director of the National Womens Sailing Association and served on the
Board of Directors of Recreational Boaters of California for 27 years (1981-2008), serving as its
President in 1994. Gail is a member of WORSA, US SAILING and owns her own advertising agency
and graphic design business in Murrieta (TeamWay Marketing & Design).
