Messiah’s Messengers
S ometimes, things are born for the most
unusual reasons. Have you ever been told
by a church pastor that you could no longer
wear jeans in your own church? And, this is
after you arrived on your motorcycle? Well,
this is a little of how Messiah’s Messengers
was started.
Founder and Director, “Pastor Tom”
Provenzano has been riding motorcycles since
his teens. He and his wife, Kathy bought their
first motorcycle together in 1976 and began
their Christian motorcycle riding experience
as charter members of the Sarasota Christian
Cycle Club. Tom described it as a “ride-to-eat”
Christian fellowship club. “It was fun. It was
a start.”
In 1999, Tom and Kathy bought a used
motorcycle. While they were searching for
that bike in the motorcycle shops, they found
a flyer posted for a Christian motorcycle
association. A new chapter was forming in
neighboring county and Tom became their first
Road Captain. With what they felt was a clear
calling to minister to bikers in Lee County,
they left the Naples chapter and started a
motorcycle ministry in the church they were
members of. At first, things went well. Tom
and Kathy sponsored the first Lee County
Church Crash. It was done in conjunction
with the church and the Christian motorcycle
ministry they originally started with. A few
years later, they were told they could no longer
wear blue jeans in the church building.
In 2003, Tom called his friend and fellow
biker, Scott “Road Rabbi” Blink, whom he
hadn’t seen in a number of months. With
the past experience and lots of prayer, he laid
out the vision for a new motorcycle ministry.
Scott and his wife, Sue invited Tom and Kathy
over for a Memorial Day Bar-B-Q at their
home. Scott had become the Senior Pastor
of Fort Myers Foursquare Church. Tom and
Kathy entered the Blink’s home to greet the
entire congregation. Messiah’s Messengers
Motorcycle Ministry was born! In that same
year, Tom became a licensed Foursquare
Minister.

Tom and Kathy host a Biker Bible Café in
their home, on the first Friday evening of every
other month. They spend one hour relating
motorcycle stories and riding principles to
God’s Word. Then, they have desserts and
fellowship. Scott and Sue host a Biker’s
Home Gathering in their home every month.
Many bikers who wouldn’t walk into the “four
walls” of a church, have no problem visiting
in the warm atmosphere of their homes.
Messiah’s Messengers spend almost every
weekend supporting runs/events of many
motorcycling organizations. Sometimes,
it involves bike blessings, praying and/or
giving invocations. Messiah’s Messengers
officiate at many weddings and funerals for
the motorcycling community. During a two
year period, Tom officiated at more funerals
than preaching in his home church. Tom
says, “It was one of the most heart-wrenching
periods of my life.” Tom is the Chaplain for
two ABATE Chapters. He writes articles
for ABATE newsletters in addition as a
guest writer in other publications. Messiah’s
Messengers spend countless hours with the
members in prayer counseling and/or visiting
bikers in the hospitals. Many hours have been
spent by Messengers in the emergency rooms
and/or the trauma unit, after bikers have been
involved in accidents.
Fort Myers Foursquare Church and its
Messiah’s Messengers members put on the
Lee County Church Crash, the last Sunday
of every January. While there, you will hear
a message, eat great food, participate in the
Slow Race Championship of the Universe
or trike games, and have your bike judged in
the “Nice Bike” show. January 2009 was its
10th year. Messengers are active members of
Meeting of the Minds, where 20+ motorcycle
organizations meet every other month to help
schedule events to prevent overlap.
Within the last year, Messiah’s Messengers
has expanded its outreach with Scott and Sue
visiting inmates in prisons.

Heading north or south in Southwest Florida can be a little

harrowing. Heck, riding at all at times can be downright dangerous.
But for a while now, I have been traveling between Lee and Collier
Counties via the scenic and very bike friendly corridor of Three Oaks
Parkway/Imperial Parkway/Livingston Road.
Starting in the north at Alico Road and finishing in the south at
Radio Road, this corridor sidesteps I-75 with its rollovers and US 41
with its stoplights with a ride that at times, makes you think you might
be in the country. There are a few stoplights along this route, but nothing
like the string of Christmas lights strung along 41. Car traffic, I have
found, has been light and disperses quick enough.
Extending your ride in the northern part can be done by heading east to
Ben Hill Griffen Parkway/Treeline Avenue that runs from Corkscrew
Road to Colonial Boulevard. In the southern part, you can head west
to Airport Pulling Road or make your way east to Collier Boulevard
which will take you to the Tamiami Trail and all the way down to Marco
Island.
Many motorcycle establishments are located very near to this
corridor. Victory Motorcycles, Florida Motorsports of Naples, Harley-
Davidson of Naples, and Gulf Coast Motorcycles lie quite close with
Everglades Motorcycle Service, Sun Sports Cycle & Watercraft, and
Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers on the extended routes.
So, next time you need to travel cross-county and want to avoid the
usual rush and stumble, consider this in-town corridor with its sweeping
turns, lush vegetation, and even changes in elevation (hills!)

 Alternative MC

W e recently had the pleasure of being involved with the Pat “MaMa Sez” Eakes Memorial
Poker Run for Abuse Counseling and Treatment (ACT,) Inc. and were formally introduced
to members of the Charlotte County Chapter of the Alternative MC.
Speaking with Chapter President, Hoop, we got some background on this particular Motorcycle
Club. A clean and sober national MC, the Alternative MC has seven chapters in Florida.
Nationally founded in 1994, the Charlotte County Chapter is in its fifth year. The MC is
recovering alcoholics and drug addicts in a 12 step program, “12 Steps On 2 Wheels.”
“Alternative MC gives a guy an opportunity to enjoy something a lot of us gave up while using,”
says Hoop. “Getting clean and sober and being able to ride motorcycles and carry the message
of recovery in our travels is a blessing most of us thought would never happen.”
From the national website, “We take great pride in keeping the integrity of our Club just that.
If you drink or use that’s your business, if you want to stop and can’t then it’s ours.” “Alternative
MC is a family oriented Club that has fun riding and is proud of being clean and sober. We feel
we have something worthwhile to offer any clean and sober rider.”
Nationally and locally, the members of the Alternative MC do a lot of community benefits,
including being a large force of the Pat “MaMa Sez” Eakes Memorial Run and putting on a
program in Cape Coral aimed at teenagers to educate them in the dangers of drug use.
We wish to thank the Charlotte County Chapter of Alternative MC and their President, Hoop,
for their time and sharing with us a part of their story. We look forward to riding with them in

revving their motors, adding thunder and
more excitement to the occasion.
Once inside, the Ultra Classic crate,
decorated to look like an Easter basket,
started to fill with gifts from the bikers.
In short order the basket was overflowing
and the seams were stretched to the limit.
Wiser heads prevailed and the last of the
toys were placed in front of the basket.
The Easter Bunny had his own basket of
beanie baby like toys to hand out to the
children and posed for picture after picture
so parents could save the memory.

Ever find yourself sitting at a stop light and you find yourself still at the stoplight, and find
yourself still at the stoplight? Believe it or not, there is something you can do about it.
I recently spent some time talking with Harry Campbell, Manager and Chief Traffic
Engineer for the Lee County Department of Transportation, Traffic Section. I was invited out
to the Signal Operations Center off of the Luckett Exit of I-75 and had the grand tour of the
facilities and got to meet a number of staff that have the task of maintaining the traffic control

There are 395 signaled intersections in Lee County, 85 percent of which are directly
monitored from the SOC. The majority of the signals are triggered by an inductive loop coil
that is embedded within the pavement, those sqaurish black figure-eights just before the lights.
Inductive loop coils can detect objects as small as bicycles and are also often used to count traffic.
Inductive loop coils at intersections are being replaced by Video Image Processors. There are
325 Autoscope cameras monitoring up to 85 intersections at this time.
Inductive loop coils get cut by construction and deteriorate over time. Cameras are more

expensive, but require much less maintainance and can be moved in case of construction.
The lights themselves have changed with the times. Once using bulbs that were regularly changed
once a year, the 12 inch lights are now LED arrays that although are initially more expensive
($328 for your typical red, yellow, green set,) recover their cost through energy conservation and
a life of up to 8 years.
Believe it or not, Traffic Engineers do not like to erect traffic signals to impede our travels.
An increase of crashes actually happens after a stoplight is installed; typically a lot more rear-end
collisions. “Sometimes with an intersection, there will be a spike of drastic crashes for a period of
years before people realize they have to slow down,” says Campbell. Nor do they enjoy making
the waits at the lights longer than normal. 180 second cycles are very common with shorter
cycles and some up to five minutes. “We’re trying to move the most cars as efficiently as we can.
It’s a balancing act.”
If a traffic signal either triggers too often or not at all, it is considered an emergency.
“When you think about it, while it’s not actually unsafe, drivers become aggravated and drive
more recklessly. It wastes fuel, it wastes time, and it puts more emissions in the air,” Campbell
explains.
But what can we, as motorcyclists, do when confronted with a traffic light that won’t change
for us? Make sure that you are positioned right behind the Stop Line (in the middle of the

figure-eight is best.) There is no magic number of light changes that has to pass before we can
legally turn. At that moment, our only legal recourse is to make a right turn and make our way
around the intersection. What you can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again is make note
the location, date, time, and description of the traffic signal malfunction or signal problem that
was observed and report it to the DOT via the Contact page of www.LeeSignalTiming.com

As far as those signal tripping magnets sold for $14-$35? Lee County Department of
Transportation Traffic Section doesn’t believe they do what they advertise. I have one affixed to
my bike, and have been caught at lights waiting for a car to come up behind me.

 Hard Rock Casino Biker Bash
We arrived at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa at around 1030am and were greeted by well
over 300 bikes in the parking lot. Though the parking lot crew was slightly confused as to how to
park a large number of bikes in a quick and efficient manner we all seemed to get it figured out
for ourselves.
From there we moved over to the bike show area to see how it was progressing and what was
being displayed. At the time we arrived, they were saying that they had about 68 out of 75 bikes
entered as advertised. The current entries were varied and most seemed to be very high quality.
We asked about the termination time for the show and found that they were going to end it
around 5pm. We opted not to enter our bike since we wanted to depart earlier.
We decided to enter the vendors’ area and see what was happening there. The whole area had
been arranged around a huge outside pool and there must have been about 35 vendors including
food shops. The whole area was very well laid out with a variety of shops and little repetition.
We sampled all the vendors and then we decided to eat. Settling on the outside barbecue which
featured two meet choices, beans, chips and two deserts; the $10 price tag was honestly an
adequate offering and was luckily very well prepared. From this point we grabbed a drink and
then found space in the courtyard grass with some shade and close to the band area. They had
two different bands playing during the time we were there with one really good and the other
should have stayed home. Someone should have explained to the lead singer of the second band
that off key and screechy are not vocal qualities that people really enjoy. Luckily, we were done
eating soon after they started playing. We left the poolside area and went into the casino for an
hour and made our prerequisite deposit into the vault’s coffers.
Back outside, we mixed in with the bike show crowd with a full field of 75 bikes being displayed.
There were some extremely nice bikes in the group so we took some pictures and then we
decided to hit the highway.
I thought it was a well planned show and it was well worth the two hour ride. I’m putting this
one on the calendar again for next year and hope fully we’ll see ya there.

On Saturday April 4th, Harley Davidson of
Naples held a special “Garage Party” just for the
girls! The intimate event was attended by 13 of our
local area women who were interested in learning
more about the riding lifestyle. They had ladies in
attendance with little to no experience, as well as
some seasoned riders with over 15 years experience.
The dealership kicked off the party upstairs in their
meeting room, where the ladies enjoyed snacks,
sandwiches and cold beverages. A representative
from each department in the dealership was in
attendance.
Each representative took turns, telling about
themselves, their riding background, and about the
department in which they work. Then it was the
ladies’ turn. As each of them shared information
about their backgrounds and reasons for attending,
you could see the smiles and acknowledgement of
similar experiences from the others. After each
had their opportunity to share, the gals were taken
downstairs where the dealership divided them up
into smaller groups of three. The ladies were taken
through a series of “stations” where they learned
about the service department, parts and accessories,
sales, motor clothes, and a chance to learn about the
Riders Edge Program.
In the motor clothes department, they learned
about the importance of riding attire. They were
shown different styles of gloves, pants, jackets,
boots, and helmets along with explanations the
proper fit can make the difference between a great
day out riding and one that leaves you tired and or
uncomfortable. The ladies were encouraged to take
their time when making apparel purchases, and not
just buy what looks good.
Some of the nicest and hottest looking outfits
might be great for when you are out strutting the
lifestyle; however, they can also be some of the most
uncomfortable things in the world when you are out
on a ride.
As I have always said, there is a price to be
paid if you get caught up in the “Style and Profile”
mentality! The people that work in the motor clothes
department can help you find things that not only
look good, but will have you riding in comfort and
enjoying your day as well!
They next moved on to the sales department
where they explained all the different models,
what made each of the models different, and what
considerations they should take into account when
purchasing a bike.

There truly is a bike for everyone, and each has
its own personality and trait, just like you. The sales
team also showed that no matter what your size, you
can handle any bike you want, and that with time
and practice can be a very proficient rider. From
Sportsters, to Ultra Classic, there are ladies that
ride them all, and the trick is easier than you think.
You just need to fit the bike to you, because just like
apparel, if you aren’t comfortable, you aren’t going to
be focused on your number 1 priority….safety.
After being told that they could ride any bike
by making a few changes they had quite a few
questions which led them right over to the Parts
and Accessories Department. There they showed
the ladies how they could not just add more bling to
their thing, but that they could make their ride even
more personalized and comfortable. By the simple
addition of a lowering kit they saw how you could
add a feeling of confidence and stability, by lowering
the bike so they could be “flat footed” on the ground.
One of the ladies said she always felt like she was
reaching for the handlebars. They showed her how
by changing a few things such as adding a riser,
rotating the bars, or choosing a different seat she
could close that distance by up to 3 to 4 inches.
Last but not least, they showed them backrests,
saddlebags, and different ways to accessorize with
chrome.
Next it was time to go to school, and they were
off to the service department. Back in the service
bays they learned quite a few things, and got some
“hands-on” experience. They showed them things
such as how to check and change their oil, how to
check their air pressure and went over the proper
pressures. They were shown how to properly adjust
their clutch, and learned how a “Easy Clutch” could
make those long stop and go times in traffic easier to
deal with. They learned the difference in fuel systems,
how to make themselves more visible from behind
and the importance of load and weight distribution.
Each lady had an opportunity to put on the gloves
and get dirty, and as they did, it became obvious that
their confidence was improving. After spending
time in the back, those who did not have their own
bike yet were getting the itch, and those that have
been riding on the back were more anxious than
ever to move up to the front and get their own!
The next logical step was to introduce them to the
Riders Edge Program.
The ladies learned about what the program would
teach them, and how after completing the course
they could go get their motorcycle endorsement on

their license. All in all, the event was a great success
because not only did they get women enrolled in the
Rider’s Edge class who wanted to move from the
back seat to the front, but it offered a great chance
for women who were on the fence or unsure about
riding to talk to women, especially Ladies of Harley
who have been riding for multiple years.

Formerly The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Komen For The Cure funds research into the causes
of breast cancer and searches for the cure.
Starting out and ending at the Hooters in Ft. Myers, more than 100 riders registered for the
Inaugural Hooters & Scooters Poker Run. Each card stop was at a Hooters Restaurant, including
those in Cape Coral, Ft. Myers Beach and Naples. More than one rider paused at one or more
of the restaurants to sample the world famous wings, have a beverage or two and admire the
amply endowed servers. Paying the tab was made easier by the 25% discount cards each rider
received as part of the registration package. And the cards were good for 30 days from the day
of the run!
After dispensing silent auction items and door prizes, K. Bain won the Best Hand prize of $150
with four 8’s and promptly donated one third back to Komen.

time friends and co-owners of Everglades
Motorcycle Service, Lynn and Michele. Located on
Beck Boulevard just off I-75’s Exit 101 in Naples,
EMS is a self-described alternative to a dealership.
