Description

Andre Breton was a leader as well as a founder of the surrealism movement. In his Manifesto of Surrealism, he defines the concept. As a poet, I've found the concept of the illogical coupling to be very useful in my work - associating two things not normally encountered in association with each other, and the resulting impact to the person experiencing it. That encounter with the non-ordinary/non-expected can be anything from a mild "ah" to a shock that blocks immediate understanding of what you are experiencing, be it visual, auditory, literary, whatever. Breton's Manifesto of Surrealism is what got me acquainted with surrealism when in college. It's still a good read.
