Innovation has always been the foundation of American prosperity. Post WW2 four industries (Pharmaceuticals, Transportation, Electronics and "Plastics") generated our new found wealth and general prosperity. That wave topped out around 1980 though inertia carried it into the 1990s. Post the present downturn we will remain in a malaise-ridden doldrums without a new wave of innovation based on a radical re-think of innovation processes.
