Applied Physical Chemistry, HW 4, Fall 2013 Due on Monday November 25th 1) (60 points; While the plots are

intended to improve your conceptual understanding, the calculations are typical of problems that would be on the exam)
Consider an equally spaced three-level energy system with energy levels, E1=0 and E2= and E3=2. A) Calculate an expression for the partition function. Then on the same graph (for comparison) plot the partition function as a function of the temperature between 0 and 1000 K, for three cases, a) = 0.005 eV, (b) = 0.05 eV, and (c) = 0.5 eV Ponder the three curves in the graph and briefly comment on your results. B) Calculate an expression for the probability of occupation of the highest energy level E3=2 . Then on the same graph (for comparison) plot this probability as a function of the temperature, between 0 and 1000 K, for three cases, b) = 0.005 eV, (b) = 0.05 eV, and (c) = 0.5 eV Ponder the three curves in the graph and briefly comment on your results.

C) Calculate an expression for the internal energy () and on the same graph (for comparison) plot the internal energy as a function of the temperature between 0 and 1000 K, for three cases below. You can assume that 0 = 0. c) a) = 0.005 eV, (b) = 0.05 eV, and (c) = 0.5 eV Ponder the three curves in the graph and briefly comment on your results. [Also note its good to remember that kT at room temperature ~ 0.025 eV]

2) (40 points; This is a type of problem that could be on the exam) Calculate the partition function for, (a) a classical harmonic oscillator and (b) a quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator. Comment on your result.
