MIGRATING FROM LOTUS NOTES/DOMINO TO GOOGLE APPS3
Introduction
As a Lotus Notes Professional and/or Systems Administrator considering the move toGoogle Apps, you may be wondering if an enterprise migration from Lotus Notes andDomino is even possible for your organization. As you continue to explore the realitiesof migrating messaging and collaboration to the cloud, you’ll learn that it’s not just pos-sible, but with the proper planning and the right execution team, you can have it all —
you can save your business money and nally provide your users the modern tools that
will make them more productive.Though there are several factors to consider when migrating your organization toGoogle Apps, this Field Guide describes four key migration concerns that should be
investigated early in your migration discussions. These areas, each of which is dened
and explained in subsequent sections, include messaging coexistence, directory syn-chronization, data migration, and Domino application migration.
Coexistence
Messaging coexistence
The coexistence of messaging systems, in the preliminary stages, entails the delity and
consistency of message format and appearance between your two, simultaneously oper-ating systems: your internal (on-premise Lotus Notes/Domino) and external (new GoogleApps) emails, calendar appointments, and/or meetings. When your company begins tomigrate its early adopters to Google Apps, other members of your organization are stillgoing to be on Lotus Notes until the migration is complete, leaving both platforms op-erational for some period of time. Maintaining coexistence and ensuring that messages
can be sent between systems without difculty is paramount during this phase.
Calendar coexistence (Free/Busy time)
Coexistence may also include the availability of Free/Busy time. Free/Busy coexistenceensures that users on Lotus Notes and users on Google Apps are able to see andoverlay each other’s calendars. If messaging coexistence and Free/Busy time are handledcorrectly, the operations of your business should be minimally affected.
Proper planning and identication of your organization’s coexistence requirements
should lead you to consider the following questions during this phase:Are all of your organization’s email attachments accessible in both environments?
Are you able to accept/decline calendar invitations from both environments?
(Note: There are some known limitations. Lotus Notes “Custom” calendar recurringpattern is not supported in Google Apps or many other calendaring environments.)
