ome 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," the day continues to be the most popular holiday for most Americans. Since then, Thanksgiving Day, every fourth Thursday in November, is celebrated as a federal and public holiday by millions of Americans. Although the first Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621, the day remains a secular one but carries deep emotional sentiments for a significant number of people.

Everyone has something to be thankful for!

Editorial
As advocated by some people, Thanksgiving is about caring and sharing with the people we love - our family and friends. This is the period when gifts and other acts of kindness are bestowed on each other. In some cases this is the only time of the year that family and friends express love and appreciation for each other. Thanksgiving, therefore, is a good time to foster family unity and cooperation. We cannot overemphasize the importance of family as we preserve our culture and promote growth and prosperity.

NOVEMBER 19-30, 2013 STREET HYPE 3

An increasing number of New Yorkers are in need of help as more than 20 percent of the population is living below the federal poverty-line, the highest level since 2000. In keeping with the spirit of Thanksgiving, this is a time for giving and sharing with those among us who are less fortunate than ourselves. This is the time that everyone shares love and warmth for each other. Every man and woman, young and old, rich or poor has something to give thanks for on Thursday, November 28. We wish all our readers, friends and family a happy Thanksgiving Day!

For example, you may be comfortable talking to strangers or you may have more knowledge about a particular topic than others. The weaknesses are factors that can hamper your ability to develop and exercise leadership skills. Weaknesses can include difficulties with trusting others and poor attention to detail. You can think of strength as any trait or characteristic that will help you become an effective leader and a weakness as any trait or characteristic that will interfere with leadership. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses may be difficult because it requires objective self-assessment. It is important for leadership, because you want to emphasize your strengths when faced with a leadership task. NY, NEW YORK: alance Cole has at least two key facts on his side in his long struggle to overturn a manslaughter conviction for a 1985 Brooklyn killing that has kept him in prison for more than a quarter century. The first is that the homicide detective who built the case against him is closely connected to an evidence-faking scandal that has prosecutors and now a New York State Supreme Court judge reexamining dozens of old convictions. The second is that another man has been trying for years to confess to the killing in question. Denzil Smith, 54, is the first to admit that he shot Michael Jennings on Aug. 4, 1985. He has confessed in detail no less than four times since 2007, most recently on video. Smith says he spoke up because he thinks it's unfair that Cole has spent all this time in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

Guyanese Man In Prison for 25 Years

The Brooklyn district attorneys office declined to comment. But in legal papers, it called Smiths confession yet another unreliable account of Jennings killing, calling it inadmissible hearsay. It focused on one unclear reference to the time of the murder to discount the entire statement.

By Ken Richards BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (WINN): he Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has been urged further to tighten the screws on the Dominican Republic to pressure the Spanish-speaking country to resolve the statelessness problem affecting Dominicans of Haitian descent. The appeal has come from lawyer/activist David Commissiong of Barbados. The Bridgetown-based attorney has welcomed the decision of the regional grouping to defer consideration of the application by Santo Domingo to join CARICOM. I was one of the persons pressing CARICOM to be very robust on this issue. So I am extremely pleased that they have taken this step, and I would like to urge our CARICOM leaders to continue the pressure, we must not relent until this issue is settled satisfactorily, Commissiong told WINN FM. There has been widespread condemnation of the ruling of the constitutional court in the Dominican Republic that strips hundreds of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent of their citizenship. Tuesdays statement on the matter by CARICOM comes at a time when reports suggest that hundreds of these people are already being deported to Haiti. Haitian president Michel Martelly estimated that over the past few days the authorities in Santo Domingo have deported 300 people who do not know the country, who do not have family in Haiti and who do not even speak the language. Commissiong says the situation is very serious and prompt steps must be taken to pre-

iss World/Trinidad and Tobago 2013 Shereece Villafana has been stripped of her crown. A press release on Monday from the Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Organisation, headed by director Athalia Samuel stated: This dethronement has become necessary as a result of unsettling reports brought to the attention of the organisation. These reports concern conduct that is not in keeping with the high moral and ethical obligations the Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Organisation strives to maintain, the release stated. When contacted by the Express, Samuel confirmed that Villafana, who represented T&T at the Miss World Pageant a month ago at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre in Bali, Indonesia, was formally released from her responsibilities as Trinidad and Tobagos Miss World representative. Samuel said the decision to strip Villafana of her crown came after the organisation received a letter from the Office of the Prime Minister informing them that Villafana received $200,000 in sponsorship money to help with preparations for the Miss World pageant.

vent further deportations. This has the potential to cause loss of life for our brothers and sisters of Haitian ancestry in the Dominican Republic we are already seeing the ugliness of it, but it can turn much more David Commissiong ugly, he warned. lawyer/activist The current CARICOM chair, Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has vowed to raise the Dominican Republic matter with the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). A delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is also scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic early next month. Commissiong says the CARICOM position sends a clear message that the region wont stand for whats being perpetrated in the Dominican Republic. It will send a message not only to the Dominican Republic, but it will send a message to the international community that we in the Caribbean are taking this thing very seriously, and it will send a message that the rest of the international community needs to pay attention, needs to put that pressure on the Dominican Republic, Commissiong said. -Republished with permission of West Indies News Network

already gave money, which I found to be strange because we never received any money, said Samuel. I didnt know what they were talking about and at times I felt embarrassed because I had no knowledge of receiving any of the monies they said they gave. I eventually questioned Shereece about receiving any monies, which she denied. Before we left to go to Miss World in Indonesia, there was some disturbing information that we were aware of but we were not able to confirm anything before leaving. After initially denying that she received $200,000 from the Office of the Prime Minister, Shereece eventually admitted during our recent post-mortem meeting to receiving the money after I showed her the letter from the Office of the Prime Minister. Her reply was, So what, everybody tells lies. What Shereece did was dishonest and embarrassing to the Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Organisation. She has to account for the money she received. The contract clearly tells you that all monies that you receive should be handed over to the organiser, that is the person responsible for your affairs and getting you prepared for the pageant, Samuel said.

KANPUR, India: ndia clinched the ODI series against West Indies 2-1 with a comfortable fivewicket victory in the third and final match here, riding on Shikhar Dhawan's sparkling century. The Indians first restricted West Indies to 263-5 and then overhauled the target with 23 balls to spare to lift yet another ODI trophy at home. Dhawan stole the limelight with an attacking 119 that came off 95 balls, his fifth ODI hundred, while Yuvraj Singh notched up a 74-ball 55 to seal the issue for the home side at the Green Park Stadium which was hosting an international game after a gap of nearly four years. It was a welcome return to form for Yuvraj, who cautiously put together 129 runs for the third wicket with Dhawan to set the platform for the easy win. Earlier, the trio of Kieran Powell, Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo struck half-centuries to propel West Indies to a challenging total. Powell (70) carried on his good form from the last match and registered his second fifty of the series. Together with Samuels (71), he shared a 117-run secondwicket partnership to lay the foundation for West Indies after the visitors were put into bat by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Towards the end, Darren Bravo (51 not out) and Darren Sammy (37 not out) played aggressively to take West Indies past the 260-run mark. Comfortably placed at 137 for one at one stage, West Indies looked set for a big score but India staged a comeback with quick wickets to restrict West Indies to the manageable score. For the hosts, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers with figures of two for 45 from his quota of 10 overs.

Stephen Souza Releases Dennis Browns Silhouette

F
or Stephen Souza and the millions of fans around the world who love the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emmanuel Brown, honoring his memory is every day, not just his birthday or the anniversary of his passing. Today is a day of honor for our Crown Prince. Stephen stepped in to the recording booth, and with the endorsement of his engineer and Junior Ewart from Brooklyns Ruff Stuff band (whom Stephen performs with on a regular basis), re-recorded the classic Lovers Rock chune from Dennis, Silhouette. Scheduled to be officially released on December 13, 2013, Stephen notes that the song is special as its meaning comes through in every note. Stephen spent years with Dennis as his opening act and sometimes background vocalist and was greatly influenced by him. As Stephen says, recreating this song was special. This takes me back to the days when Dancehall was sweet and people danced with each other. Thats where we need to get back to.

amaican Tessanne Chin moved into the top six of the American television talent contest, The Voice, during Tuesday night's results show that proved nervewracking for the competitors. Chin, who injected a Jamaican flavour to the NBC contest Monday night with an energetic performance of the reggae number Underneath It All by No Doubt, featuring deejay Lady Saw, was visibly nervous each time presenter Carson Daly announced the name of the contestants who, based on public vote, moved up to the next round. Her anxiety, however, ended on the fourth announcement which triggered celebration among Jamaicans on the island and in the diaspora, as well as from her coach, Adam Levine. Levine now has three members of his team in the top six as Chin was joined by Will Champlin and James Wolpert. Also making the top six were Cole Vosbury, who is coached by Blake Shelton; Jacquie Lee and Matthew Schuler, who are both coached by Christina Aguilera. Schuler, however, was saved by Twitter voters.

hanksgiving Day was by President declared Abraham Lincoln In 1863. The autumn harvest feasts that the Wampanoag Indians and the Plymouth colonists shared is now recognized as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. Before this, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. Thanksgiving is a national holiday that many Americans celebrate with family and friends by sharing huge meals accompanied by various religious and cultural traditions. Here is what Thanksgiving means to some residents of New York City: Thanksgiving is a time when people get together with their families. They have good meals together and enjoy themselves. They also get to reflect on the things in the family and close friends, Ian Gideon Brown, 34, Reggae Artist Thanksgiving to me means being surrounded by the people I am most thankful for and that is my family. Thanksgiving truly is the holiday that makes me feel grateful to have my parents, aunts, uncles and cousins in my life and appreciate the good times and laughter we share, making those the most memorable moments, Kerry Rose Leahy, 20 (CUNY Student)

ANNIVERSARY

10th

he Math Club Inc. was incorporated in 2004 as a 501(C)(3),not for profit organization. The main goal of the organization was to introduce ways to motivate students to put more effort in their math work. The idea was born out of soccer training sessions with youths in Bronx, New York. Tutoring sessions was set up at Richard R. Green Campus on Barnes Avenue, Bronx, New York. The turnout of students for these sessions was very good, but we never got any volunteers. Therefore we had to make changes to method to motivate the students. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Math Competition was introduced to provide incentives to students by offering a desktop computer for the top seventh grader in the competition. Incentives were also provided to teachers for preparing and encouraging students to participate in the competition. The top teacher was given a cash prize of three hundred dollars. The Math Club is now celebrating its tenth year of existence. The competition was not conducted in 2008 due to my deployment to Iraq as a US Army soldier. Since the inception of The Math Club and the math competition we have received great participation from students coming from schools all over the Tri-State areas. We are very grateful to all those students, the teachers and parents. However in this article I would like to highlight some sponsors who gave us their support. Special thanks to the following: Junior Jawara Blake of Vegans Delight; James Alston of McCalls Bronxwood Funeral Home; 1199 SEIU president George Gresham; Attorney Donald Vernon; Dennis Hawthorne of Dennis Shipping Company; Vincent Hosang, Royal Caribbean Bakery and Omar Hawthorne of Golden Krust Bakery; Patrick Maitland, publisher Street Hype Newspaper; Sharon Pearson; The Beacon Program at Richard Green School; Bobby Clarke of Irie Jam Radio; David Annakie of Linkup Media. We are asking businesses, churches and individuals to contact the Math Club to purchase business card size commercials to advertize their businesses and/or send wishes to the Math Club, on this page. Looking forward to your usual kind support as we seek to promote mathematic education among our children.

air extensions can last up to six months if they are of high quality and are well taken care of. And if you are going to invest that much money on high quality hair extensions, of course you are going to take the best care of them possible. Making sure you know how to take care of hair extensions is very important in keeping them looking natural and in good shape, whether they are made from real hair or are synthetic. Washing your hair and hair extensions is very important, and the shampoo you use can make all the difference. The best thing for hair extensions is to use a gentle shampoo. The worst thing you can use is dandruff shampoo or other abrasive shampoo that can deteriorate the bonds of the hair extensions. The last thing you want is you extension to fall out because you used the wrong type of shampoo. Conditioner can also be bad for hair extension bonds because it can loosen them. You don't have to stop using conditioner though, just be careful to avoid applying too much near your hair extension bonds. Brushing your hair is also important for proper hair extension maintenance. Many people with extensions are afraid if they brush their hair too much they are going to pull the hair extensions out, but really the chances of this happening are very small. By not brushing your hair you are letting the hundreds of hairs that you naturally lose every day get stuck in your extensions. Try to brush your hair twice a day or more to avoid this and to avoid the hair extensions becoming

matted. Before you go to sleep be sure to brush out your hair and then loosely braid it so it won't tangle during the night. Besides when in the shower, try to avoid getting your hair wet for long periods of time. This not only might make your hair extensions get knotted easier but it could also weaken your bonds. Another thing you have to be careful about with hair extensions is the heated hair styling tools you use. Make sure you always use ionic flat irons and hair dryers, and never use them directly on the bonds as they will melt and you will be left with serious problems. If you follow all these rules you should have great natural and healthy looking extensions.

elieve it or not what is the chance of you getting your car stolen twice in a month by the same person! Well, it did happen. Police have nabbed a Bloomfield man they say stole the same car twice within 31 days. The first time, on Sept. 16, police alleged that Quinton B. Lewis purchased a 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL550 using two fake checks totaling $36,500. On Oct. 17, the vehicle was impounded by the Paterson Parking Authority for improperly parking in an area where a permit is required. Lewis allegedly tried to retrieve the vehicle using a drivers license issued in his real name but, since he could not prove that he owned the vehicle, he was turned away, police said. He then returned and simply stole the car off the impound lot. Saddle Brook police say they arrested him last week at a Dunkin Donuts in Elizabeth while he was working for a private ambulance service. For special advertising and editorial

The defendants were convicted following a one-week trial before U.S. District Judge William H. Walls in Newark federal court. The jury deliberated two hours before returning the guilty verdicts. According to documents filed in this case and the evidence at trial: Yarleque and Moreno obtained 10 fraudulent loans over a period of three years. They falsified their employment and income, failed to disclose their debts and other properties that they owned, and lied about where they lived. They fraudulently obtained a total of $3.4 million in mortgages this way and personally pocketed approximate-

The defendants made up a phony business where Moreno was supposedly employed (My Limousine). They then obtained a phone line in the name of My Limousine and had it forwarded to their personal cell phones. When mortgage lenders called to verify Morenos employment, the defendants lied, posing as fictitious employees, using names such as Janet Alvarez and Casandra Sterling. Our brains are designed to focus on what is wrong. It does so in order to keep us safe in other words, our focus on possible dangers is what keeps us alive. Unfortunately, this design mechanism does not necessarily serve our relationships. Many of the things we recognize as wrong in the people we love are simply misinterpreted actions based on our past experiences with others. We react more than we respond. We defend more than we seek to understand. And while it is important to recognize harmful actions and words, it is equally important to recognize those actions and words that bring us joy and fulfillment. And since holidays involve being with family and friends, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to make a renewed commitment to showing our appreciation and gratitude toward the ones we love. Here are five ways to take Thanksgiving into your relationships for the next 365 days. 1. Say Thank you for the little things people do. Just because you expect your husband to take out the trash doesnt mean that a thank you is not in order. Show your appreciation. 2. Make sure you demonstrate your love for others in the ways that they recognize and receive love. Some people want a hug, some people want to hear the words, and others want to know their needs matter through your actions. Find out how your loved ones prefer to receive love and speak their language whenever possible.

3. Remind yourself what it is that you like the most about your significant other. Make a list of those qualities you admire and respect. Find a way to acknowledge those qualitiessometimes simply saying I love your ability to be so organized; it helps me stay organized myself can make someones day. 4. Take the time to connect with your loved ones from your heart every day. We are so busy and have so many responsibilities that it gets easy for our focus to stay on getting things done and talking about the days events from our heads. Make sure you get out of your head for a moment every day and connect with your loved one from your heart. Look into their eyes and feel your love for them in your heart. I promise the heart energy that is generated will benefit you and your loved ones in profound ways. 5. No matter how hard a moment in time may feel, remember that you and the people you love have the power to support one another in getting through hard times. It is through the spirit of connection and community that we not only survive together, but thrive together. Celebrate your relationships every day! I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving today and everyday throughout the year.

Dear Angela: I'm pleased to help. However, I'm sure my readers will want to add to the list, which is a short one. ARE YOU READY FOR PARENT-HOOD? (1) Can you support the child financially? Children are expensive. I always urge people to complete their education and delay parenthood until they are selfsupporting in case they should find themselves in the role of sole provider. ( 2 ) Can you support the child emotionally? Babies are cute, but they are also completely helpless and emotionally needy. While some young women say they want a baby so they'll have someone to love them, the reality is it's the parent's responsibility to love and sacrifice for the child.

Dear Divine Diva: work with adolescent girls and over the years so many of them has been pregnant, You are so good at coming up with lists for things, Divine. Could you compile a list of criteria for what makes a really good parent? It would be nice to show them what that adds up to. -Angela in Pleasantville

Am I getting upset over nothing? this stunt. -Offended, Not Threatened I don't believe my husband is interested in her, but everyone at the company knows he is married, and for her to show up Dear Offended: with him as her escort is highly insulting to Your husband may be "fun and entertainme. Steve agreed on the phone to go with ing," but he is also married -- and that her this afternoon and told me about it when means he's out of the escort pool. He should I got home from work. I told him how I felt, not attend the function without you, and his and he immediately said he wouldn't go -- daughter and her "mentor" were out of line to ask. he hadn't realized it would bother me. -Always Divine Diva I told him he now "has to" go or she Please send questions and comments to Divine Diva divinestreethype@gmail.com

In plain English, this means the end of a normal teenage social life because babies are extremely time-consuming. (3) Are you prepared to be a consistent parent? Children learn by example -both good and bad. Are you prepared to be a role model for the behaviors you want your child to mimic? Because mimic they do. They learn more from what they observe than what they're told. (4) Have you read up on child development? Are your expectations of what a child should be able to accomplish as he or she reaches various chronological milestones realistic? Ditto for your partner, whether or not he or she is the child's biological parent. (5) Are you prepared to put someone else's needs before your own for the next 18 to 21 years? Remember, babies can't be returned to the manufacturer for a refund if you're not 100 percent satisfied. Sometimes they come with serious challenges. Can you cope with those realities? If the answer to any of these questions is no, I strongly advise postponing parent-hood. -Always Divine Diva

Garlic tea immune enhancer A well-known immune system strengthener, garlic shines as an antibacterial and antiviral herb for fighting colds, coughs and the flu. One of the best ways to take advantage of garlic's healing properties is by drinking fresh garlic tea. Sweetened with a little raw honey, it's delicious and helps to heal what ails you. Peel 2 to 3 cloves of fresh garlic and lightly crush them with the side of a wide knife blade. Add them to 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for another 15 minutes. Strain the garlic and allow the tea to cool to mouth temperature. Add raw honey, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Drink as much as desired.

Raw honey and lemon for sore throats A mixture of fresh lemon juice and raw honey provides soothing relief for sore throats and helps stop the tickle that stimulates coughing. Raw honey -- with all its components including royal jelly, propolis and bee pollen -- is high in nutrients and enzymes which kill bacteria and viruses. The vitamin C and antioxidants found in fresh lemons boost the immune system, speeding healing. Together these two home remedies are a powerhouse for getting over a cold and sore throat. Mix the juice of 1/2 the lemon with 2 to 3 tablespoons of honey and sip throughout the day as needed.

Red onion and raw honey cough syrup A wonderful home remedy for adults or kids suffering from a cough uses brown cane sugar, raw honey or stevia and red onions to make a soothing and tasty cough syrup. Wash, peel and slice the entire onion horizontally. Starting with the base of the onion, layer the slices in a bowl alternating with layers of raw honey or brown sugar. Stevia powder works well for this home remedy too; however, it is extremely sweet. Continue adding layers of onion and sweetener until the entire onion is reconstructed in the bowl. Cover and allow the sweetened onion to remain in the bowl on your counter for about 12-15 hours or

Chicken soup antiviral Chicken soup really does act to knock out a cold or the flu and hasten healing. As long ago as the 12th century, the Jewish physician Maimonides recommended consuming chicken soup to fight colds and flu. Take advantage of the high antioxidant properties and nutrients found in organic vegetables and chicken. Although non-organic chicken soup may relieve some cold symptoms, it also supplies the body with pesticides, growth hormones, herbicides and antibiotics that are not recommended for well being. Go organic all the way and get well quickly.

By David Shedd rowth is a pre-requisite for business success. In todays rapidly changing business environment, most companies need to grow just to stay in place. They need to expand market share, seek out related and new market opportunities, and constantly pursue new customers just to stay even over the long haul. To grow successfully, businesses need to build upon their success with current customer and grow outward from there.

How to Grow Your Business

market share with your current product line in your current market space. Satisfying your current customers strengthens your brand and proves that you live up to your brand promise. Building on this strong brand and referrals from your good customers, viral market out and penetrate new customers in your current market space. 3. Work with Current Customers to Determine New Product and Service Opportunities: Your best customers realize that you are an excellent and reliable supplier. Especially, with B2B (business-to-business) customers, these good customers will often invite you to help them in other related parts of their business where they may be having issues. They may also want your help to refine current products and services or to solve new problems that they may be facing. Pursue these potential opportunities aggressively, as they will bind you closer to these best customers and point the way to new product and service offerings that can then be offered to your entire customer base. 4. Pursue Market Opportunities Already Under Your Nose: Be easy to do business with and open to the potential customers that are contacting you today looking for help to solve their problems: You Dont Know Me; But, I Want to Give You Money! In addition, follow up with and learn more about the newest customers that are buying from you. Why do they now need your products and services? Is this a trend? Are there other companies in their same market space that now need your products and services as well?

1. Satisfy Your Current Customers: The first step for business growth is to exceed the expectations of current customers. This reduces your customer turnover (churn), which means that you no longer have to find new customers just to replace current customers that have stopped buying from you due to poor service. Further, satisfying your current customers allows you to increase your share of wallet with them. 2. Increase Your Market Share in Your Current Market Space: Increase your overall

5. Actively Pursue New Products and Market Opportunities: This is the proactive part of growth and business development. It includes seeking out growing and profitable markets, solving customers problems, and finding new market niches where your company can have a sustainable competitive advantage. This can include all the sexy stuff that they teach about in business schools: new product development, market entry strategies, joint ventures and acquisitions.

Braata to Stage Ole Time Grand Market

The Grand Market tradition, which dates back many years in Jamaica, is the Christmas season's most anticipated event. It typically happens on Christmas morning and is characterized by street dancing, arts crafts, food and music. It is a time when markets all over the island set up with vendors selling toys, firecrackers, balloons, and other children delights. Braata will re-create this Christmas tradition inside the Jamaica Performing Arts Center for the entire family Andrew Clarke founder of Braata said.
