How to Start a Small BusinessStarting a small business can be a challenging, yet rewarding endeavor. Whether you’reopening a sandwich shop, or offering public relations and marketing services, there aresome basic steps you need to take to ensure that your business gets off to a promisingstart.1.Decide what your business will be, and stand behind it. It doesn’t matter if yougroom dogs, coordinate events, cut trees, or tutor children—your business must beyour passion. If you cannot be enthusiastic or sincere about a business that youyourself are building, you cannot garner patronage from your surroundingcommunity and your business will suffer.2.Put together a business plan. This will help you to stay conscious of your businessgoals and the means by which you will work to attain them. There is no set lengthfor how long a business plan should be, and business plans contain differentelements depending on the type of business. However, you should remainconscious of the fact that the more detailed you can be in your business plan, themore efficient your business will run. Take time to do an industry assessment, consider your competition, and in times like these when the economy is weak, consider factors that could limit your business and clientele. Brainstorm someoptions for combating fleeting incomes and ways to set your business apart fromyour competition.3.After you’ve chosen what your business will be, you must obtain an appropriate business license. Most licenses can be obtained from the city where youlive/where you will be conducting business, but each city has differentrequirements depending on the business type. If you will be selling a product youwill be required to obtain a seller’s permit, if you will be working out of your home you may be required to obtain a home occupational permit, etc. Your cityoffice will be able to provide you with the information necessary for obtaining thecorrect permit for your type of business. They’re usually really eager to help outtoo!4.Implement a marketing strategy for spreading the word about your business.Often the most powerful marketing tool is word of mouth, but word of mouth is born out of successful experiences by previous clients. If you plan on selling a product, try giving out some samples of your product for free. If you aremarketing a service, stay flexible in your rates for your first few clients to getthings started. Once you’ve built a client base, gradually increase your rates toreflect your experience and quality.a.Other key marketing tools include collateral materials such as brochures, flyers, posters and business cards, and website and email connectivity.Online printers such as VistaPrint offer great deals and templates for  business cards, posters and brochures with competitive pricing. Or, if youhave a preferred printer you like to work with, go through them for asmany of your printing needs as possible. By working with the same printing service for all of your products, you save money on setup fees.
