Sgt. 1st Class Forrest W. Robertson Killed In Battle With Taliban Insurgents In Afghanistan

Robertson, 35, of Westmoreland, Kan., died Nov. 3, in Pul-E- Alam, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters troops, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Stewart, Ga” (source: Pentagon Press Release, dated October 4, 2013).
 
 Unconfirmed reports suggest this was an “ambush style attack using RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenades) and small arms fire by Taliban insurgents bent on revenge for the killing of Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud in Pakistan 3 days earlier by U.S. drone attack. His family resides in Hinesville, Ga, and his mother resides in Westmoreland, Kansas, according to the office of Senator Moran. Sgt. Robertson is listed as a former Military Science Instructor with the Department of Military Science at Pittsburg State University. Marine From Ouachita Parish Has Been Killed In Combat In Afghanistan
Lance Cpl. Christopher O. Grant October 21, 2013 By Paul Purpura, NOLA.com  A Marine from Ouachita Parish has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Monday. Lance Cpl. Christopher O. Grant, 20, an infantryman, was from Richwood, a north Louisiana town of less than 3,000 residents near Monroe. Grant was killed Sunday, during what was his first combat deployment since he enlisted 15 months ago, according to the Marine Corps.
 
He was a 2012 graduate of Richwood High School, where he was active in the Junior ROTC program, according to a report on The (Monroe) News Star newspaper's website. The school flew its U.S. flag at half-mast Monday in Grant's memory, according to the website. Grant enlisted in July 2012 and was promoted to lance corporal on June 1, a Marine Corps spokesman said. His awards include the Global War on Terror Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Grant was conducing combat operations in Helmand province when he was killed, according to the Defense Department.

Richard Vazquez Nov 20, 2013 by Jessica Limmer, Seguin Gazette SEGUIN — Richard L. Vazquez gave his all to the United States. “He loved defending his country and he did it well,” said brother Romario Vazquez. “I could sleep better at night knowing he was protecting us.” On Wednesday, Romario said Staff Sgt. Richard L. Vazquez of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group died doing what he loved. He died of injuries suffered during an IED explosion while deployed in Afghanistan. Richard, 28, was well-known in Seguin as a member of the Matador football team and a 2004 graduate of Seguin High School. Though the family has moved to Louisiana, Romario said he’s been deeply moved by the outpouring of support from Seguin.
