Is education is about learning information. Then yes But if education wants to include competencies, Skills and behavior changes.. then are you sure?

You do have human interaction with an online learning environment, and can still foster strong relationships. As for "physical" human interaction, some people do need that, so a traditional classroom setting would be better. But as you said, the best scenario is a little bit of both. I agree with that. Thanks for the comments!

What traditional classroom-instruction offers and that online-instruction does not is human interaction and the chance to foster relationship. It's this human interaction that leads to collaboration, which sparkles innovation. The best scenario, in my humble opinion, is to have both.
helenwinslow:
Don't buy that. Performed better how?
jessica_chiang :
I believe that the students are evaluated via tests (need to check whether it's online or not). But to be fair, the paper does state that "caution is required in generalizing to the K–12 population because the results are derived for the most part from studies in other settings (e.g., medical training, higher education)."
helenwinslow:
I"ll say, caution is required. That's like apples and oranges. Assuming you get over what seems to be the threshold assumption that test performance is all you're after, and/or the best indicator of whether a student has fully digested the subject matter. I admire you for slogging through all 93 pages btw!

Sounds like a fascinating study. I look forward to reading. Thanks for posting.
Thank you. My findings were similar. Please see • "Campus of Open Learning-A New Education Paradigm", Jain, V. P., VOL XL No 37, 5-6, 2002.Mainstream VOL XXXIX No 9, 13-17, 2001. Also posted on Web-site: http://www.scribd.com/people/view/6506

Thank you for posting this, I had read it awhile back and was impressed. I just re-read it. A very important topic. A real way for the rural poor to overcome poverty.
I have been teaching online for the past 4 years. It is such a great experience. Thanks for the post.
There is a panel proposal for this year's SXSWi conference in Austin called: "Crash Course: Is E-ducation Making the Classroom Obsolete?" http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/vie... The main question it asks is: "Are Web-based learning applications supplementing or supplanting the traditional classroom, and what does the learning curve tell us?" In the panel we will address the findings of this study and debate their implications. If you are interested in advancing the public debate around the future of learning, please vote for this panel! Thank you everyone for the great comments about online learning versus traditional classroom learning. Keep them coming. I think it's a very important subject. This is what future education will look like, it will be about sharing knowledge across borders, potentially, wiping out rural illiteracy around the world. I only uploaded the document a few hours ago and I see it almost has 300 reads.

QUESTION: Online learning or traditional classroom learning - which do you prefer? What are some of the benefits? http://bit.ly/SyhQw FROM: poopinion: @weirdchina Think both. Traditional is great for learning public interaction skills. I prefer online though for convenience. You? http://bit.ly/FxBel
QUESTION: Online learning or traditional classroom learning - which do you prefer? What are some of the benefits? http://twitter.com/weirdchina/status/... FROM: BillGlover: @weirdchina I like online learning because I can't commit to a regular class. But I've found the best results come with a balance of both. http://twitter.com/billglover/statuse...
Besides the flexibility factor, online education saves you time & money.
