Introduction
So You Want to Ride?So you want to ride a motorcycle. You want to feel the freedom, the wind in your hair, theworld whizzing by you, the dizzying sense of spring, the delirious colors of fall. In your decisionto ride, you have shown determination and decisiveness. You have just taken your first steptowards becoming a motorcycle rider. You have stepped forward as a strong, independent person.Your decision can bring you forward to join the ranks of the thousands of women who havemade this same liberating decision. Now is a great time for women to ride. There are morewomen riders now than there ever has been before. Women have made tremendous gains insociety in the last thirty years, and motorcycling is no exception. Today, Kawasaki has its first professional woman motorcycle racer and other women are following suit. Women are breakingspeed records at the salt flats and burning up the track racing on track days. Women motorcycleriders come in all different shapes and sizes. We come from all different backgrounds andcultures. We all have different personalities and preferences, but what we share in common is theoverwhelming desire to ride.2

Many women throw away hundreds of dollars to invest in a safety course and gear thinking that they will eventually grow to enjoy it.Then they become frustrated and quit, learning too late that they should have said something inthe beginning. If you are terrified of riding and are only doing it to make someone else happy, you will not enjoy riding. Riding is a personal choice that you must make when you are personally ready. Nobody can make that decision for you. If you feel upset, panicked or areexperiencing a sense of impending doom, listen to your instinct. Riding is not for everyone and itmust be a choice made consciously and willingly. This choice is your responsibility. It is youwho must be motivated. It is you who must fulfill the commitment. It is you who brings yourself to realizing your dream.Whatever the reason you decided to ride, when you told people about it, I imagine some people tried to discourage you. They probably told you that motorcycles aren’t safe. But what3
