Mr. Duez | AVID - Room #2605 Blue 2 | Atascocita High School 2009-2010
Course Information:
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The courseprovides four year support to prepare students for college. There will be at least one field trip per semester to acollege. Students will have tutoring twice a week. AVID Students will be working in AVID class to improve as astudent in many ways. Examples include, SAT and ACT test prep, research writing, presenting to the class, anddiscussion with guest speakers.
Grading:
The six weeks grade consists of the following: A. binder grades/projects & essay grades
60%
 B. daily grades/tutoring
40%
 The semester grade includes the average of the three six week’s grades and a final exam. The final examaccounts for 20% of the final semester average. The final exam is an essay. Students will choose from a list of essays that we have worked on throughout the semester. The essay is written in class on the day of the finalexam.
Tutoring:
AVID Tutoring is the backbone of the program. In tutoring, students will be receiving helpfor any class and especially their honors, pre-AP, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit classes. Students willcome to AVID class prepared for tutoring on Tuesday and Thursdays every week. AVID tutors are collegestudents that are official district employees. The tutors go through a number of trainings to become proficientin the "AVID Way" of tutoring. The tutors will lead AVID students through a Socratic method of discovery fortutoring. AVID students will bring at least one question to each tutoring session filled out on notebook paper andprepared for the tutoring session. Materials would include their binder and books. Students are graded by their tutors on preparedness for tutoring, their tutoring question, participation, and notes during the session.
The Binder:
All AVID students will receive an AVID binder. It is a 2.5 inch binder with 3-rings. All binders need to have:
 A pencil pouch filled with at least 2 pens, 2 pencils, and highlighter.
 At least 5 dividers, marked with a tab: Math, Science, SS, English, and AVID.
Single sheet lined notebook paper with 3 holes.
 An agenda or planner. (The best one is the school planner. Mr. Duez will have some downloadablecalendars on his website. There is no excuse for not having a calendar in the binder to keep track of tests,projects, and school dates.) AVID Binders can have (but do not need):
1 pocket pouch folder with 3 holes ONLY 
1 spiral notebook ONLY 
 A 3 hole punch that snaps into the binder
The AVID binder is a very serious part of the program. All AVID students will use them. If students arenot willing to follow this organizational process and use this tool for learning, severe consequences will result(possibly including removal from the program). Mr. Duez has his own AVID binder and uses it daily as hisgrade book, calendar, and notebook for meetings. He is a big believer and since using the AVID binder has become much more organized himself!
