Did you ever wonder

about integrity? As of late I’ve pondered about this a lot inmy writing, my other job (non profit humanitarian work), my love of positive and thought pro- voking quotes. Specifically, I want to better myself in “walking the walk.”It’s not that hard to come up with fantastic and inspiring quotes. It’s not that hard to sharethese quotes in a note to a friend. It’s not hard to clip a quote from somewhere and stick it tothe refrigerator. It’s not even hard to enjoy thinking about great quotes in a meditative fash-ion.Where I am most tested is in the everyday situation~A recent “for instance” comes to mind.Just over a week ago, I drove through the drive through window at a coffee shop. The first three times someone spokethrough the speaker, all I could hear was “wha wha wha” garbled and then the words “Africa.” I even looked over at myson in the passenger seat and asked him if he could understand what was said and he shook his head. I apologized to thespeaker, asked if she could speak with her mouth further from the microphone. She did. The question: Would you like to buy a pound of coffee where the proceeds go to help children in Africa? I said, “Sure.” The woman said, “Great! That will be $15.00 at the window.” That was it. She was gone. I sat there until she spoke through the speaker again. “Yes?” sheasked. “I wanted to order a couple of coffee drinks (which IS WHY I was there). The woman laughed and apologized. Iordered the drinks and pulled forward. I waited behind the car in front of me for several minutes (nearly ten to be exact) while I watched this woman hang out the window talking with a person who appeared to be her friend.This is where I get frustrated and “forget” that I truly want to be kind, understandingand sympathetic. I start thinking things like “incompetent, rude, time is wasting.” And without fail, once I start thinking about the negatives, the more negatives come my way.I get to the window feeling frustrated and then she asks me if I’d like my coffee beansground. Since I don’t own a coffee grinder I needed to have the beans ground…this couldhave been accomplished during my ten minute wait.My quandary is that if I complain, I’m continuing the cycle of frustration…if I don’t,the next person receives the same kind of lackadaisical service and in the end I’m frus-trated either way. I remind myself when I am pulling away that I should “be kind, for ev-eryone you meet is fighting a hard battle” (Plato), and that the “True measure of a man is

 Shrimp Cocktail
?
Call it a "shrimp cocktail" for your fuel tank. Scientists in China are reporting devel-opment of a catalyst made from shrimp shells that could transform production ofbiodiesel fuel into a faster, less expensive, and more environmentally friendly pro-cess. Their study is scheduled for the Aug. 20 issue of ACS' Energy & Fuels, abi-monthly journal.Xinsheng Zheng and colleagues note that an energy-hungry world, concerned about global warm-ing, increasingly puts its future fuel hopes on renewable fuels like biodiesel. Today's biodiesel pro-duction processes, however, require catalysts to speed up the chemical reactions that transformsoybean, canola, and other plant oils into diesel fuel. Traditional catalysts cannot be reused andmust be neutralized with large amounts of water — another increasingly scarce resource — leavingbehind large amounts of polluted wastewater.The researchers describe development of a new catalyst produced from shrimp shells. In laboratorytests, the shrimp shell catalysts converted canola oil to biodiesel (89 percent conversion in threehours) faster and more efficiently than some conventional catalysts. The new catalysts also can bereused and the process minimizes waste production and pollution, the scientists note.(from http://www.happynews.com)

Brick Oven Courtyard Grille will give you a $10.00 gift certificate for helpingsupport our community by donating to Working Class Hero Fund. Go to
for more information.
Working Class Hero Fundis a newly established organization founded on the tenet thatthere are many good, hard working people in today’s society that experience traumaticevents that leave them unable to meet basic necessities. While these individuals wouldchoose not to seek charity, they find themselves in an unenviable position of needing assistance, and thenfind that they do not meet guidelines of more traditional providers.WCHF will provide crisis funding for local individuals that can prove they are gainfully employed and canshow need. Participants must be able to articulate what circumstances caused the crisis, and what stepsthey plan to take to prevent similar circumstances from occurring again. Funds will not be distributed to theindividuals, but directly used to resolve the immediate crisis. Participants will not be asked to repay theamount, but will be asked to sign an ethical contract that will require that they somehow “pay forward” thegood will assistance that was given to them. That “pay it forward” can be as simple as helping a friend inneed, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, or volunteering at a local non-profit.
