Bald eagle (2)JuvenilesBald eagleadultSandy HevenerSandy HevenerWest of VA 637 north of US 250 2.4milesOver McDowell, US 250 & VA 654Two hatch year BE on ground eatinggroundhogs near perch tree. Theycontinued to feed while I let sheep outgate but then flew to hill west. Onetook part of a groundhog with it. Whenthe sheep ran up the hill one flewtoward me and up into the perch tree.It remained perched while the otherfeed. They seemed less nervous of methan eagles other years and act likeolder eagles that are familiar with myroutine. I wonder if the experiencedones communicate/show things toyoung ones like sheep. (Laurel ispoisonous to sheep. If one eats it andsurvives, it remembers not to eat it forits entire life and can safely grazeareas with laurel. I’ve observed that ifyou put ewes with young lambs inthese fields, the lambs don’t try to eatlaurel either.)Adult bald eagle circled with vulturesand several crows then harassed theeagle.
