Introduction
AlthoughtheclassicalviewheldintheWestwasthatIslamic philosophyconstitutedapassingphenomenonandwasmerely abridgebetweenthelateantiquityandtheLatinhighMiddle Ages,graduallyawiderperspectiveisbecomingprevalent. Thankstothewritingsandexpositionsofasmallnumberof scholarswritinginWesternlanguages,theperiodduringwhich overamillenniumofIslamicphilosophywasrelegatedtoa shortchapterentitled"Arabicphilosophy"andinsertedasa briefpausebetween"serious"periodsofWesternthoughtis nowinmanyareasdrawingtoacloseevenifthischangeofview hasnotasyetbecomeprevalenteverywhere.TheWesthas beguntobecomeawareofothertraditionalcivilizationsas independentworldsworthyofconsiderationintheirownright ratherthanonlyasstepping-stonestowardsthefoundationand developmentofthemodernWest.Othertraditionalintellectual universeshavebeguntorevealthemselvestothosequalifiedto perceivetheminalltheirgrandeur,innerunityandatthesame timerichdiversity.Inmoderntimes,theWestfirstturnedtothe metaphysicalheritageofIndiaandtheFarEast,althoughthey arefartherremovedfrom
its
ownheritagethantheIslamic world,'butnowgraduallythesameprocessistakingplaceinthe caseofIslam.ForeightcenturiessincethetranslatorsofCor- dovamadetheworksofIslamicphilosophersaccessibletothe LatinWest,theviewwasheldthatIslamicphilosophy(which wascalledArabicphilosophy"becauseofthelanguagefrom whichitwastranslated)consistedofthewritingsofafewmen suchasal-Kindi(Alkindus),al-Farabi(Alfarabius),IbnSma (Avicenna),al-Ghazzali(Algazel)andIbnRushd(Averroes) whosimplytransmittedthephilosophyofAristotleandthe NeoplatoniststotheWestaddinglittleoftheirown.Itisnow
