Logo Design
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: November 2nd 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: These Logos were designed for two of my very best childhood friends, they both have their Nail Tech licenses and have shown interest in starting their own business. When I was assigned this project in my Visual Media Class, I instantly thought of the two of them! I volunteered to design a logo for them, free of cost because they have always been such good friends to me, and also I have gotten my nails done by one of my friends a few times for a considerably lower price then if I were to go to a local salon, and she did a good job Process: After I received the idea of designing for my friends, I asked their permission and then I searched for inspiration. Pinterest and Google Images were my main sources for seeking inspiration. My favorite idea was to use the shape of a nail as a key element in the logo, I used that as my starting point. I opened Illustrator and just started playing with shapes, text and designed my heart away! Programs/Tools Used: Pinterest- Google Images (as Inspiration), My friends (the Company owners) Jaycie and Alexisis, Illustrator

Letter Head
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: November 9th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: This project was inspired by two things: 1. My sister Mariel, who often we tell people who struggle with her name that Its just like Ariel from the Little Mermaid with an M. 2. Growing up, my sister and I would pretend to be mermaids whenever we went swimming, as Im sure most girls do at a young age (and maybe even now) I saw this maybe 3 years ago on Pinterest and I wanted my very own Mermaid tale: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/188658671861088736/ I found out they were kinda pricey, and I looked up a tutorial on how to make them. One day Id like to try it, but for now Ill just create a fake company for them. Process: I began by designing a logo in Illustrator. I took the same logo into a stationery In-Design Document and copied elements found in Illustrator to In-Design to be able to create a repetitive unified company design. I created sea-weed like lines in the design as well as bubble to give the design an under the sea kind of look. Elements were repeated throughout the design with color and shape. Programs/Tools Used: Illustrator, In-Design 6

Business Card
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: November 9th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: These were my business cards for the same Client as my letter-head I followed the same design concept to create unity in the business. Process: I began by designing a logo in Illustrator. I then took that logo into my Business Card Designs. I formatted my Business Cards in In-Design to show size and how the two sides will come together. The same line elements were repeated from the stationery design. The bubble/shape element was also repeated from the logo and stationery design. Programs/Tools Used: Illustrator, In-Design

Imaging
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: October 17th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: This project was designed to focus on basic photography and photoshop skill sets. We were assigned to take pictures with good composition, appropriate lighting, a sharp focus and strong focal point. The photoshop portion of this assignment was to desaturate a portion of our photograph and add a filter. Process: My photograph was shot in garden on campus at BYU-Idaho when my sisters came to visit me for a weekend. The little girl in the picture is my baby sister. After my photo shoot with my sisters I reformatted my image in photoshop, cropped it to the appropriate size and resolution. After my image was appropriately sized, I reopened the image, created a base layer and then a duplicate layer. On my duplicate layer I preformed a de-saturation technique to the wood in the photo. After I finished the de-saturation I created a another layer to allow a filter on the wood. After my filter was applied on another layer I used my history brush so that I was able to fix the filter and de-saturation that was picked up from my selection tool from the beginning. Programs/Tools Used: Nikon D3100 Camera, Photoshop

Event Ad
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: October 11th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: This was a challenge for me because I have always had Adobe programs around me since my mother is a graphic designer and I pursued a life of design as well. I was NOT allowed to use Adobe programs on this specific project, I quite honestly did not know how to use word to design anything, I never needed too. There were times where I really wanted to open up illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop but I was able to compose this project entirely from MicroSoft Word as I was assigned to do, even the logo which was a struggle but a push for me. The assignment was to create a flyer for a beneficiary and a benefactor using a high quality image that we were to scan. Process: I began with an idea of grilled cheese..Honestly I dont know where the idea came from but it came. I used a picture that I took at a place called Meltaway one of the very first pictures I took with my Nikon D3100. I sent that picture to be printed at Walgreens then I scanned the image into my computer through my own personal scanner that seemed to have advanced enough options to perform the correct scanning procedure we had learned in class. After using the options on my scanner, I opened up PhotoShop from my computer to make sure the formatting of my image was correct- I didnt have to do much tweaking as far as formatting went, I had a well formatted image to begin with.Next, I placed my image in MicroSoft word and proceeded to play with layout, color and text. Programs/Tools used: Microsoft Word 12

Montage
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: October 26th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: I was to create a montage from 2 or more images (I have 3) and gradually blend them together to make a point. Process: I sought inspiration from pictures on my own computer. I was able to find a picture of me when I was Super-girl for my little sisters birthday party and a picture another one of my little sisters took of their video game (The Monster Attack Newspaper). I got the idea to use Black Friday as my subject and Super girl as my theme encouraging shoppers to stay Super safe during their Black Friday adventures. Techniques I used included, Using Mask Layers, blending techniques, layer and text drop shadows and other effects. Programs/Tools Used:Photoshop, Internet (http://politicsdownanddirty.blogspot.com/2012_11_23_archive.html) , Iphoto, Nikon Point and Shoot s3100

Brochure
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: December 7th 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: This Brochure has 5 different sections, each section has a page that overlaps the previous page just enough so you can see the titles of each section Process: This Brochure was created to showcase me. The Process of this was long, It was difficult for me to figure out how this would print out. I designed this primarily in Indesign, however I did some photo editing in Photoshop- of course. I gathered information, pictures and then designed the layout. I then placed my images and figured out where I wanted my text to display. Programs Used: InDesign, Photoshop

Web Page
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: October 3rd 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: This was my very first experience with HTML, it was quite the learning curve for me. Process: Although Ive grown up on design, this was not something I was ever taught. We were to create a logo, the logo I designed was the one I use as my website logo. After designing a logo we were assigned to form a web-page using HTML. After we received a general understanding of HTML we applied the concept of CSS to our web-page design. Skills: within the design of the document I used repetition in colors. I also created this webpage to kinda match the style of my real website. The majority of my web-page was designed in left alignment within the center space. The first header and logo used center alignment. The page was written so material was placed under an appropriate topic.I now have a clearer understanding and appreciation for web-page design, CSS and HTML. Programs/Tools used: Text Wrangler

Flier
Course: Visual Media Section 3 Date: October 3rd 2013 Instructor: Julie Peterson Description: I was given the information, picture, logo and was assigned to design the layout. The layout had to fit in with the P-A-R-C-F principles (Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast and Flow) to create a visually appealing image to the target audience. Process: I started by sketching 4 possible layouts with a fine pen. I then opened up In-Design and began to play with variations of my sketches. I started to play with alignment and repetition. Once I was pretty much set on my layout I began to search for fonts that would be appropriate and visually appealing. I had trouble finding a title font that I felt pleased with for this particular design so I searched on dafont.com for a more exciting font, I played with my options for quite a while. Once I found a set font style I had to rearrange my alignment and adjust my kerning. Then I used simple effects such as applying drop shadows and feathers. Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe In-Design, dafont.com, Visual Media course instructions and content
