WHAT IS ISP?
In-Syste m Programming (abbreviated ISP) is the ability of someprogrammable logic devices, microcontrollers, and other programmableelectronic chips to be programmed while installed in a completesystem, rather than requiring the chip to be programmed prior to installing it intothe system. The primary advantage of this feature is that it allows manufacturersof electronicdevices to integrate programming and testing into a single productionphase, rather than requiring a separate programming stage prior toassembling thesystem. This may allow manufacturers to program the chips in their own system'sproduction line instead of buying preprogrammed chips from amanufacturer or distributor, making it feasible to apply code or design changes in themiddle of aproduction run. Typically, chips supporting ISP have internalcircuitry togenerate any necessary programming voltage from the system'snormal supplyvoltage, and communicate with the programmer via a serial protocol.Mostprogrammable logic devices use proprietary protocols or protocolsdefined by
