person who has a transient attraction to a corpse, but corpses arenot the main object of his sexual fantasies.
According to the latterdefinition, the preferable sexual contact in pseudonecrophiles re-mains a living person. Because of the multitude of meanings theterm pseudonecrophilia has come to acquire, it is preferable todo away with this term entirely and follow the classification sys-tem suggested below.
3. Proposed classification of necrophilia
Some classifications of necrophilia already exist. Rosman andResnick
classify all necrophiles in three groups with an additionalcategory of pseudonecrophilia. However with more literaturepouring in since their suggestion, a newer classification is moreappropriate. A new classification is also desirable, because it tendsto put an end of an enormous confusioncurrently centering aroundthe term pseudonecrophilia. According to some authors it refers toan arousal from having sex with someone pretending to be dead,
according to others
it refers to people who find sexual stimula-tion in the presence of the dead, and according to yet others,
it re-fers to those persons who are normally content with having sexwith the living, but given an opportunity, would have sex withthe dead too. Quite obviously such a situation may generate con-siderable confusion among scientists trying to communicateamong one another. Some general classifications of diseases, especially DSM-IV-TR
and ICD-10
have been devised precisely to prevent such kind of confusion occurring among scientists. This is achieved by assigningmathematical codes to diseases, instead of subjective names.Mathematical codes also enable easy computerization and com-munication. But neither DSM-IV-TR nor ICD-10 assign any specificor unique code to necrophilia, let alone its subclasses. DSM-IV-TR assigns code 302.9 (paraphilias not otherwise specified) to necro-philia along with several other uncommon paraphilias. ICD-10too classifies necrophilia under the code F65.8 (other disorders of sexual preference) along with several other paraphilias such astelephone scatologia and frotteurism. A classification system istherefore urgently needed – preferably mathematical for easycomputerization and communication – for all subclasses of necrophilia.A ten tier classification – from class I till class X – is proposed inthis paper in order to address this issue. As can be seen, the threedifferent definitions of pseudonecrophilia mentioned earlier wouldnow fall in three different classes according to the new proposedsystem – classes I, III and VII. Thus there is no scope for any confu-sion over terminologies. Instead of talking about subjective termsas pseudonecrophilia, one would refer to objective mathematicalclasses. The proposed classification is based on severity of psychosexualdisorder present among the necrophiles. This classification, besidesbeing simpleand elegant, appearsto have an intuitiveappeal.Fromthe least innocuous to the most, all necrophiles may be categorizedin following ten categories:
3.1. Class I necrophiliacs: role players
These people are only mildly pathological, since they seem toenjoya kind of role playing. They do not have sex with a dead body, but get intense arousal from having sex with a living person
pre-tending
to be dead. It is a kind of s
exual role play
. Some authorshave called this practice pseudonecrophilia.
Some others haveused the terms simulated necrophilia, and symbolic necrophilia.
A more appropriate term appears to be necrobiophilia (from Greek
nekros
, dead, and
bios
, living). Certain Parisian brothels cater to thisperversion; the prostitute is made up like a corpse with a pallidappearance, dressed in a shroud, and lies in a coffin (often knownas casket sex).
A person may want his sexual partner to cover herbody with a whitish cosmetic to simulate blood-drained skin of acorpse, cover her in a plastic sheet and even add a toe tag beforestarting sexual intercourse. Some may utilize a resurrection fan-tasy where the lover brings the ‘‘dead” partner to life through sex-ual activity. The lover who pretends to be brought back to life mayturn the tables on the other, dominating him, and even acting out azombie fantasy.Sometimes a vampire fantasy is involved where the lover sim-ulates a killing by biting the neck. A case is recorded of a woman, who imagined herself to be a vampire. She would ask her husbandto pretend he was dead and then stimulate his organ with hermouth. She would then pretend that the resulting erection was rig-or mortis, and this would give her erotic pleasure.
3.2. Class II necrophiliacs: romantic necrophiles
These people show only very mild necrophilic tendencies. Theseare the normal bereaved people, who cannot bear separation fromtheir loved ones. They do not seem to agree that their loved oneshave died. They mummify their loved ones’ dead body (or partsof them) and continue relate sexually to them much as they didin life. Their psychopathology is only transient in nature, and theywould normally recover as time passes. From a legal standpoint, classes I and II necrophiliacs are quite innocuous. There are nocases on record, where they have been prosecuted; class II necro-philes may be in need of psychiatric help though.
3.3. Class III necrophiliacs: People having a necrophilic fantasy –necrophilic fantasizers
Class III necrophiliacs are somewhat less innocuous from a legalstandpoint. Psychosocially, they do show an aberrant behavior andare thus abnormal. These necrophiles do not engage in sexualintercourse with the dead. They are content simply with fantasiz-ing sexual intercourse with the dead. They may visit cemeteriesand funeral parlors often for this purpose, and merely the sightof dead bodies may give them erotic pleasure.
Some would like to have a sexual intercourse in the presence of a coffin, because it increases their orgasmic intensity. Some may beseen masturbating during funeral sermons or dirges as they sit in acrowd of mourners. These kinds of incidents have occurred at theParis morgue several years ago, whereby a certain number of indi-viduals were discovered, on different occasions, in the act of mas-turbating in front of the glass case where the cadavers wereexposed. These incidents ultimately necessitated a well-directedsurveillance system to prevent repetitions.
Most paraphiliacs in the first three classes never get to touch adead body. Those who never touch the dead but find sexual grati-fication merely from looking at them have been labeled
platonic necrophilisists
, or
platonic necrophiles
.
All these cases may betermed as cases of latent necrophilia or fantasy necrophilia, withthe perverts known as latent necrophiles or fantasy necrophiles.Asseen earlier, many authors have called this pseudonecrophil-ia.
Taphophiliais the namegiven to peoplewhoget arousal fromfunerals.
3.4. Class IV necrophiliacs: tactile necrophiles
These necrophiles go one step ahead of class III necrophiles andneed to touch a dead body in some erotic way in order to get anorgasm. They enjoy touching, stroking parts of the dead body, suchas genitalia or breasts or perhaps licking them. Some may eventake up jobs as mortuary attendants, or some other job dealingwith the dead, because they want to be near dead bodies. They
