GIFT DONATION During its November 2013 regular session, Edon Northwest Local Board of Education graciously accepted a custom-designed FFA logo sign as a gift donation to the District. While years in the making, contributions from Edon FFA, its Alumni and Advisor, Paul Stoll (who spearheaded the project as well) ultimately brought their FFA pride to reality. The colorful, recognizable emblem is located outside the Ag departments west entrance. By: Lucinda Held-Faulhaber THE VILLAGE REPORTER Edon Northwest Local Board of Education addressed a brief, clear-cut agenda during its regular monthly session held Tuesday, December 10, 2013 in the schools Media Center. President Jill Jacoby called the early evening meeting to order with all members ~ Dave Haase, Terry Hake, Brad McCrea and Suzi McCullough ~ in attendance; guests present included newly-elected board members Aaron Hake, Jamie Schaffter and Dave Wehrle. In addition to taking care of routine business, the Board took up confirming the 2014-2015 Calendar as well. Theres not a tremendous difference between the two proposed calendars you have from the committee, noted Superintended Ed Ewers. [Outside] the obvious start date in August and ending date in May, the biggest difference is whether [or not] we have two weeks for Christmas. He later shared Calendar A, overwhelmingly approved by the Teachers Association, closely resembled calendars under consideration by neighboring districts that either share District students going to their buildings or have student transportation arrangements with Edon. After addressing questions regarding options Calendar A and Calendar C ~ along with considering which proposal would meet with both teacher wishes and student testing needs ~ Board members went on to approve Calendar A. The 2014-2015 School Year will find classes beginning Wednesday, August 20 (with an Open House on the 19th); Thanksgiving Break ~ November 26-28; Christmas Break ~ December 22 January 2 (classes to resume Monday, January 5, 2015); Spring Break ~ March 30 April 3 and Thursday, May 28 as the last day for students. The full calendar will soon be available for viewing at www.edon.k12. oh.us. Before entering into executive session, Board Member Dave Haase paused to commend his colleagues, outgoing members Terry Hake, Jill Jacoby and Suzi McCullough. Id like to thank our board members who happen to be going off [at the end of the year], he shared. Youve done a very good job at representing our District and our kids. We thank you. Those in attendance applauded their fine efforts as Board members over the past years as well. Additional December Reports to the Board, highlighted by District administrators, included:

Holiday Boozers Beware: Fulton County Officers Are Cracking Down On Drunk Drivers
[Wauseon, OH] This holiday season, Fulton County police will be out in force cracking down on drunk drivers throughout the region with aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement. From Dec. 13, 2013, to Jan. 1, 2014, state and local law enforcement will be watching for drunk drivers to help keep roads safe for holiday travelers. Fulton County Safe Communities and Fulton County Law Enforcement is giving fair warning to all partygoers. Youll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period and if we suspect anyone is driving while intoxicated, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk driving, said Fulton County Sheriff Roy Miller. Unfortunately, the excitement and celebrations of the holiday season can lead to terrible decisions-- and serious legal consequences. Data shows that the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers on the roads, and all Fulton County Law Enforcement are prepared to stop and arrest any drunk driver they see to keep roads safe. Nationally, in the Decembers from 2007 to 2011 there were 4,169 people killed in crashes that involved drivers with blood Alcohol concentrations of .08 grams per deciliter or higher. The December holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, and we are going to keep our roads safe for travelers heading to visit friends and family, said Sheriff Miller. This holiday, we will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road. If you choose to drive drunk, we will see you, we will stop you, and you will be arrested. Drunk drivers often face jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, to lost wages due to time off from work. Even worse, a drunk driver can cause a traffic crash that claims someones life, or their own. Please follow these tips to keep the holidays safe and happy: Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunkor worse, the risk of having a crash while driving. If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins. If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a sober friend or family member. Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someones life, and inaction could cost a life. Remember, it is never safe to drink and drive: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Daniel Bignell, 40, made an Alford plea to three counts of rape in Williams County Common Pleas Court this morning. Williams County Common Pleas Court Judge J.T. Stelzer then found him guilty of the charges. The plea happened in the midst of his jury trial, which started Monday. Bignell was indicted in September after an investigation by the Williams County Sheriffs Office revealed that he had raped three children over a period of 11 years. The crimes happened between 2001 and 2010 and began when the children were 13-years-old or younger. Investigators began looking at Bignell after one of the victims, who is now an adult, came forward. That is very courageous, said Attorney General DeWine. The case is being prosecuted by attorneys from the Attorney Generals Special Prosecutions Section. Bignell will be sentenced on January 9, 2014, and could receive up to 30 years in prison.

Brady Township Officials Address Snow Removal

The Brady Township Trustees are requesting residents cooperation during snow removal this winter. When cleaning out driveways, residents are asked that they do not push the snow onto or across township roads, to avoid traffic hazards. Also, they are asked to not park along the edge of roads and streets during snow removal. It is the townships policy that only mailboxes or posts actually hit by a township truck or snowplow will be repaired or replaced. Mailboxes damaged by moving snow will be the owners responsibility.

United Way Of Fulton County Needs Your Help

The United Way Fulton County is nearing the end of our 2013 campaign. Donations have been coming in slowly, and we anticipate that a few more company campaigns will come in within the next few weeks. To date, we have received pledges for only 65% of what we received last year. Unfortunately, as the economy worsens, the need grows. If you have already donated to the United Way during this years campaign, thank you for your contribution. If you have not yet donated this year, please consider giving whatever amount is comfortable for you. If all of us give just a little, we can make a big difference in the lives of so many in Fulton County. Your contribution, no matter the amount, does make a difference! When you give to the United Way, you are investing in our community. You are helping feed hungry families; you are providing children from low-income families with school supplies and books; you are providing safe shelter for domestic violence victims; you are assisting cancer patients under going treatment; you are helping families to become financially stable, and so much more. Every time a child succeeds in school, a family is able to stay in their home, or someone overcomes poverty, our entire community benefits-you benefit. At some time in our lives, most of us have struggled with making ends meet. Imagine what it must be like for someone making minimum wage trying to raise a family or an elderly person on a fixed income. It takes everyone in the community working together and caring for one another to create a brighter future. Together, we can accomplish more than any single group can on its own. There really is a way to make our community an even better place to live. It begins when you make a choice. To reach out. To lend a hand. To open your heart. To give. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. If you would like to mail a contribution, the United Way address is 604 S. Shoop Ave, Suite 122, Wauseon, OH 43567. For further information, please contact the United Way office at 419-337-9606.

Winning The Battle For A Generation

HAVE YOU EVER DREAMED OF LIVING & DYING WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO?
Ive had many conversations with people who do not enjoy their work and consequently pass their time dreaming of doing something with their life that they truly love. Have you ever dreamed of living and dying what you love to do? Eighty-six year old Joy Johnson, a veteran of 25 New York City marathons, died with her running shoes on. Johnson, who was the oldest runner in this years marathon, fell at the 20 mile marker in the event. She crossed the finish line at about eight hours. After the race she returned to her hotel room, lay down with her shoes on, and never woke up. Amazingly, Johnson didnt run her first marathon until she was sixty-one years old. The only hint of the sport was the verse from Isaiah 40:31 which hung on the kitchen wall in her family farm home in rural Minnesota. Ironically, the career gym teacher, Johnson was a stranger to personal exercise until she took a three-mile walk in 1986. Then she started jogging and competing in 10-K races. By 1988 she had competed in her first New York City Marathon. Three years later she recorded her best time at age sixty-four with a time of 3 hours and 55 minutes. A few years ago she told a reporter about her exercise regimen. She would wake up at 4 A.M., drink her coffee while reading her Bible, and then set out on an eight mile pre-dawn run. When you wake up it can either be a good day or a bad day, Ms. Johnson said. I always say, Its going to be a good day. The devout Christian ran every day but Sunday so she could attend church. Johnson sang hymns to herself to pass the time while running. According to Johnsons daughter, She was always a happy runnerand besides her faith and family, this was something she loved the most. The fuel to love life and enjoy it is described by Isaiah as hope and what encompassed Joy Johnson Isaiah 40:30-31 (NIV), 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
