Biochemistry can be very interesting, but the text books can make it seem boring. The easiest way toget rid of this, is to carry a textbook wherever and/or whenever possible, with you. Because, ideas doflash in your mind, without any notice, anytime.Stick to one good textbook from the start of the course. You may take the help of your instructor inchoosing one. This is the best method to keep focused on the subject. You can always add on extrapoints (such as from the lecture notes or the ones you may come across from Internet) in that book itself, with sticky tag. This warrants in purchasing a book. Some of the good books are, Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Harpers Biochemistry, Voet & Voet, Schaum’s Outlines Biochemistry.Don't be afraid to write in your book - the vocabulary words, condensations of ideas, personalreactions, etc. Interact with the book the way you'd interact with a person. Your texts provide a valuableresource during and after your academic career. If you find yourself reading a chapter in a textbook and not being able to remember what you read ?There is a sure way to remedy this. It's called label in the margin. ( when you don't understand write "Idid'nt understand" in the margin. When you read the same chapter subsequently you will understand it,simply because you know that you have not understood. "
Believe me
this mantra
works
".
Read only one paragraph at a time
, and before you begin to read that paragraph look for a reason toread it. Use clues such as the heading or topic sentence
.
When you finish the paragraph, put yourself inthe position of your professor. What test question will you ask fr om that paragraph? Actually write thatquestion in the margin of your textbook.
Now mark the answer to the question
by underlining, numbering, boxing, circling, etc. Put thisinformation in your long-term memory now by
covering the text and asking yourself the question writtenin the margin.Recite the answer in your own words.Keep Practicing these tips when you read your text book. For information on Biochemistry visit my web site at
