Sanjay Patel The Kings Speech Evaluating Film Posters.

. Poster 1: When initially looking at the poster, the readers eyes are drawn to the title of the film. The title (The Kings Speech) is written in a serif font making it looking important, professional and unique while the colour of the font (gold) connotes the importance of the title of the film. Secondly the reader will then look at the characters appearing in the film. They are well known British actors so the audience will instantly be able to recognise them from other films, this helps promote the films British-ness as well as drawing in different types of audiences to enjoy seeing certain actors on screen. In spite of this, the audience are still unaware of the films plot. In the poster each actor is dressed in similar / formal style clothing. This makes give the idea that each character is of the same hierarchy, whereas Colin Firth is of higher importance appearing as a King compared to Geoffery Rush how a general member of the public. While looking at the actors on the poster it is easy to see why it caused conflict for the audience. Each actors face is heavily airbrushed, it is not done subtly and as a result each character has a unnatural glow. By adding this amount of airbrushing before the publication of the poster it appears to the audience that it is take and the film may be unrealistic. When looking at the background, we can see a cloud backdrop has been used. In my opinion it makes the film look unprofessional, and gives the audience no guidance about the films plot. The only clue to the narrative of the film is the text at the top of the poster reading When God couldnt save the King, The Queen turned to someone who could. From this the audience may gather that the films plot involves a struggling King getting help from a friend. The poor design of the poster may influence the audiences choice on whether to see the film in cinema.

Sanjay Patel Poster 2: The readers eyes are drawn straight to the centre image of the poster. From here they may be able to gather some idea about the films narrative. Connoting that may involve a stealing speaker, whose job involves a heavy amount of speak reading to the public. Directly below the image is a quote from film critics A FILM THAT MAKES YOUR HEART SOAR. A RARE COMBERANTION OF CROWD PLEASER AND TRIMAMPHANT ARISTRY by adding this to the films poster it appeals to the audience by making to look popular. When the quote also being quite positive it will encourage audiences to see the film as they are mainly enflanced about what film critics have to say about a film before/ seeing it for themselves. The title of the film has also been significantly reduced. It is positioned lower down, but it stills quite a main element of the film. The crown placed above the letter eye may enforce the idea of the film containing elements of history and monarchy bringing in audiences who are a fan of British cutler. Also by changing the font colour to red it may connote the danger, or passion that has been put on the film or appearing within the film. In spite of this, the actors appearing in the film are not very clear. With no images of actors on the poster the audience may struggle to identify the people in the film for example, people who are not fully aware of actors names may not know who Helena Bonham Carter is unless they have seen her face in other films.

Poster 3: When looking at the poster that audience will be able to see straight aware that it has been designed with a modern approach. When looking at the Colin Firth poster, the reader can see that the image is more important than the text because the little amount used. The title of the film is also quite important. The fact that its coloured gold enforces this idea. There is little critical reception for the Firth film. This is an attempt to encourage the audience to see the film

Sanjay Patel with an opinion of their own without being influenced by others. The only element of the narrative is the medals on Firths left shoulder. This may suggest that he is more of an important person and has done things that deserve recognition towards the public. When looking at the Rush poster, the audience can see that it is filled with lots of response to the film. This is an attempt to encourage people to see the film (opposite with the Firth poster) as this actor may be less known to the public. Also the little use of Photoshop creates a element of naturalism, suggesting that the film may look better than advertised in its first poster. The date of the release is centre bottom of the page, this is the last place the readers eyes will look, allowing them to remember the specific date and possibly see the film during its release.

The Social Network: When looking at this poster you are able to quickly see the similarities between this and the previous poster above. The image of the main character is placed at the centre of the page, connoting importance and influence throughout the film. There is clear, defined text written above the character. This is the same as The Kings Speech where Colin Firths poster also has a slogan for the film. In spite of this no narrative about this film is given. There is no title of the film or any text regarding release dates, companies or actors in the film ETC making it hard for audiences who may want to see the film conduct any further information.

Sanjay Patel Poster 4: In my opinion this is more of a family related poster, appearing light hearted and enjoyable for a wide range of audiences. This opinion may be given off by the actors appearing in the poster. They are happy and look like they are enjoying life because of their smiles. The background of the poster is tinted yellow/ gold. From this the audience will associated the colour with positivity and happiness. The title of the film is coloured white, suggesting its neutral and also stands out against the images on the poster. The only clue of the narrative of the film is the small crown placed between FIRTH and RUSH. However this is quite small, and people who havent analysed the poster carefully may not be aware about the films plot. A factor drawing the audience to see the film is the 4 Winner Academy Awards Best Picture again this text is more likely to influence the audiences decision to see the film in the cinema as people are more likely to listen to critics than thinking about the film for themselves. The clear rating also allows audiences to see if the film is available or not, it also adds a element of professionalism to the poster as well. Looking at the bottom based on a true story is also more likely to draw people in who are interested in British history / heritage.
