Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services commissioning Joint Commissioning panel for mental health The Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health has published 'Guidance for Commissioners of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services'. This guide aims to be of value to CCGs and NHS England. It looks at what a good quality, modern, child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) looks like; why a good CAMHS delivers the mental health strategy and the Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention initiative; the benefits of CAMHS to children, young people, their families and carers; and why CAMHS are important for commissioners. http://www.jcpmh.info/wp-content/uploads/jcpmh-camhs-guide.pdf Overlooked and forgotten Children & Young Peoples Mental Health coalition This review looks at how well children and young people's mental health is prioritised in the current commissioning landscape and offers support and recommendations to health and wellbeing boards on how they can prioritise and address children and young peoples mental health. http://www.cypmhc.org.uk/resources/?category=11 Eye care commissioning guidance College of Optometrists/Royal College of Ophthalmologists The College of Optometrists and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists have published guidance for commissioners of eye care. Admissions avoidance and diabetes: guidance for clinical commissioning groups and clinical teams Diabetes UK This report finds that there are tens of thousands of people with diabetes a year who are not receiving the support they need to manage their condition from primary care or do not have sufficient access to specialist diabetes teams once they get to hospital. It calls on the NHS to do more both to prevent diabetes-related hospital admissions and to make hospital stays shorter. http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News_Landing_Page/Improving-diabetes-servicescould-reduce-pressure-on-hospitals/ State of the nation 2013 Diabetes UK This report highlights the continuing challenge that diabetes continues to present to the NHS and that quality of care is uneven throughout the country. Checking against NICE standards people who live in the best-performing CCG area are four times more likely to be given eight of the vital health checks recommended by NICE as compared to people living in the worstperforming area. It argues that diabetes care is adequately funded but that the focus of the spending should be on prevention rather than treatment. http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Documents/About%20Us/What%20we%20say/0160b-statenation-2013-england-1213.pdf

Beating the effects of winter pressures British Medical Association The British Medical Association has published a briefing paper 'Beating the Effects of Winter Pressures'. The paper examines the causes and effects of winter pressures on the NHS by looking at public health pressures, such as seasonal surge in respiratory infections, and pressures that exist within the health system, such as the current strain on emergency services. The BMA says it is possible to create a health system that is sufficiently robust to react to the additional demands placed on services during the winter but this will require the government to take a much longer-term approach to addressing these pressures. http://bma.org.uk/news-views-analysis/news/2013/december/bma-plans-to-tackle-winterpressures Health trainers half year review: 1st April - 30th September 2013
