Description

The concept of the nation state has been readily challenged in the age of globalization. Sovereignty is now defined in international interest, regional alliances, and trade agreements. Yet sovereignty in today's global era does not guarantee the breaking of international law especially in the sphere of Human Rights.
Sovereign governments such as Somalia and Haiti have descended into the failed state status. Hence the United Nations has been charged with the task of nation building and protecting unarmed combatants in war-torn areas. Yet we find that the UN has an inconsistent track record in this most vital area due to the nature of its charter, corruption, and top heavy bureaucracy. The purpose of this essay is to examine its ever-changing role in the era of peacekeeping.
