Homosexuality – Evolutionary cul-de-sac

The Supreme Court of India is presently hearing arguments related to Sec 377 of the
Indian Penal Code (IPC). The argument brought forth is related to decriminalizing
homosexual acts between consenting adults.

In support for the repeal are cited advances and changes in the law in the West, primarily
in Great Britain. The IPC having been brought into application during British rule in
India, it is argued that there is no relevance of such a law when it has been given up in its
country of origin. The American Psychiatric Association too has removed homosexuality
from its list of diseases. The liberal section of society and media is very much in favor of
repeal of the relevant law. As usual it is to the West that the “libera-tti” is looking to for
help. This only reveals intellectual bankruptcy. To cite an example, India has been trying
to control teenage pregnancies and population explosion especially in the rural
uneducated society. However, advanced and so called educated societies too are facing
the issues of teenage pregnancies, primarily from liberalism gone out of control.

Leaving the above arguments aside, I would like to look at the issue from a new angle.
Evolution by natural selection is a pet theory of many enlightened and educated people
and those holding contrary views are held to be obscurantist and orthodox. One may
wonder what evolution theory has to do with homosexuality. One of the fundamental
principles of natural selection is survival of the fittest and propagation of the good
qualities to the next generation. Richard Dawkins in his book “The Selfish Gene” takes
the argument further. He says that genes in themselves are tuned to propagate themselves.
This may be a very simplistic summation of his book, but if we take it to its logical
conclusion, we reach the evolutionary cul-de-sac. Homosexual sex whether legalized or
not, is a dead end in terms of propagation of the species. The argument that homosexual
couples can adopt children does not hold water. It is like the cuckoo expecting the crow
to hatch its egg!! How then can nature allow such a thing? If it happens, it has to be an
aberration and cannot survive.

Before I finish, let me reiterate that I have nothing against homosexuals per se though I
do not approve of the act. One should be able to hate the sin and still love the sinner.
