Of the first seven theaters, the downtown theaterwas unique for being the host of many importantfilm events in Austin, such as the QuentinTarantino Film Festival and Harry Knowles'sannual Butt-numb-a-thon.In 2006, due to rising rent in downtown Austin, theater owners took steps to hand the theaterover to a non-profit group called the "Heroes ofthe Alamo" foundation, operating the theater asa cultural arts center. However, with the historicRitz Theater on 6th Street offered as analternative location, the original Alamo wasclosed. The final event at the original locationconsisted of a special triple-feature event theevening of June 27, 2007. The final movieshown was Night Warning, with star SusanTyrrell attending. At the conclusion of themovie, audience members were allowed todisassemble their seats and take them home asmementos of the theater. After six months of construction, the AlamoDrafthouse at the Ritz opened on November 2,2007 with a triple feature of Matango: Attackof the Mushroom People, with a five coursemushroom feast; a sneak preview of No CountryFor Old Men; and a Terror Thursday screeningof War of the Gargantuas, introduced byQuentin Tarantino who flew out from LosAngeles for the night to attend the opening.

“The story that goes is that the downfall
ofthe theatre was an agreement madebetween AMC and Disney to give theAmericana an exclusive showing on"Annie". Disney made the agreement butstipulated it was for 18 weeks. AMC wasn'table to get out of the contract and dugitself deep into the red and was not able to
recover financially on the theatre.”
