GEOMETRY
1.
On this page, we hope to clear up problems that you might have withparallel lines and their uses in geometry. Parallel lines seem ratherinnocent, but are used in some complex geometry situations to help yousolve problems. Click any of the links below to start understanding parallellines better!Transversals How to tellif lines are parallelUsing parallel lines to find information abouttriangles Quizon Parallel LinesBefore you start working with parallel lines, you have to know what parallellines are.
Parallel lines
are coplanar lines that do not intersect. There aretwo other kinds of lines you need to know about. One is
 skew lines
, whichare lines that do not intersect and that are on different planes.
 Intersectinglines
are lines that have a point in common.A
transversal
, or a line that intersects two or more coplanar lines, each at adifferent point, is a very useful line in geometry. Transversals tell us agreat deal about angles. There is a special rule used in geometry (the
Transversal Postulate
) thatinvolves angles and transversals. It says that if two parallel lines areintersected by a transversal, then the corresponding angles are congruent.
1. Given:
is parallel to
s

angle 1 = 60 degrees
Find the measures of the otherseven angles in the accompanyingfigure (below).

Solution:
Angle 2 = 120 degrees
since it issupplementary to
angle 1.
Supplementary angles are any twoangles whose sum is 180 degrees.
Angle 3 = 60 degrees
since
Angle 1
and
Angle 3
arevertical angles.Vertical angles are two nonadjacentangles formed by two intersectinglines.
Angle 4 = 120 degrees
since it issupplementary to
angle 1
.
Angle 5 = angle 1
by the
Transversal Postulate
.
Angle 6 = angle 2,angle 7 = angle 3
, and
angle 8 = angle 4
by the
Transveral Postulate
.

On this page, we hope to clear up problems that you might have withproving triangles congruent. Triangles are one of the most used figures ingeometry and beyond (engineering), so they are rather important tounderstand. Side-Angle-Side
is a rule used in geometry to prove triangles congruent. The rule states that
if two sides and the included angle are congruent totwo sides and the included angle of a second triangle, the two triangles arecongruent.
An
included angle
is an angle created by two sides of a triangle.
1. Problem: Is triangle PQR congruent totriangle STV by SAS? Explain. Solution:

Segment PQ
is congruentto
segment ST
becausePQ = ST = 4.
Angle Q
is congruent to
angle T
because
angle Q = angle T
= 100 degrees.
Segment QR
is congruentto segment
TV
because QR = TV = 5.
Triangle PQR
is congruentto triangle STV by
Side-Angle-Side
.
Side-Side-Side
is a rule used in geometry to prove triangles congruent. Therule states that
if three sides of one triangle are congruent to three sides of a second triangle, the two triangles are congruent.

1. Problem: Show that triangle QYN is congruentto triangle QYP.
