Brumfields Gallery

Brumfields Gallerys first show of 2014 unites Heidi Preuss Grews delicate and yet sturdy ceramic sculptures with Michael Barnes surreal lithogaphs. Heidi Preuss Grews work pairs well with Barnes imagery as the two artists use the human psyche as a direct source of inspiration for their artworks. By melding humans, animals, and symbolism together, both artists use their pieces to elicit personal interpretation by the viewer. Each explores the deepest levels of the human condition. Grews handbuilt ceramic sculptures fuse aspects of human and animal interaction to create works that have a specific meaning and psychological impact. The results are pieces that allow the viewer more freedom in their interpretations, as the pieces straddle real and fictional worlds.

Heidi Preuss Grew & Michael Barnes Brumfields Gallery January 11 - March 1

The artist writes, Beyond a title and comments at an exhibition opening, I tend to withhold the deeper intention behind most work and enjoy, rather self-indulgently, the speculative comments from viewers. Her process is personal and intuitive, through which, she seeks to share her impressions with a broader audience. Her sculptures are physical embodiments of the vulnerable and pathetic elements she identifies in the human condition. Anything from a conversation to a hand gesture can inspire the beginnings of another unique anthropomorphic sculpture. Barnes work is based on self-investigation and reflection of his own subconscious. The work often depicts solitary figures that exist within vacuous environments, bound within these spaces while being tempted and agitated by exterior elements. He describes his current work as focused, more directly on human nature...The strange hybrid and mutated creatures...are domesticated beyond recognition and beyond any level or self-identity or function. The creatures are trapped and anonymous, left to their own devices in an unfamiliar world. The act of translating these abnormal scenes and creation of meaning by each individual viewer through self-reflection is what the artist intends to inspire. Michael Barnes and Heidi Preuss Grews exhibition will open on Saturday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Brumfields Gallery. The show will run until Saturday, March 11. Brumfields Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
