What is the project?
The N. Denver Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project will include wider sidewalks, installation of new street trees,pedestrian level lighting, benches, stormwater treatment planters, public art, and street resurfacing. The projectimprovements will be constructed on N. Denver Avenue from Interstate Avenue south to Watts Street. The PortlandBureau of Transportation has designed the project and will supervise construction. The Portland DevelopmentCommission will fund the project as part of the ongoing Kenton revitalization program.
When will construction begin?
Construction is slated to begin in early September. The construction contract has been awarded to R&R GeneralContractors of Wilsonville. The project will also include related utility work coordinated with other parties including the Portland Water Bureau and Portland General Electric.
What can I expect during construction?
While the sidewalks are being rebuilt, traffic lanes will remain open in both directions. Each block and one-half of theadjoining intersections will closed to traffic for 10 to 14 days during street resurfacing. Traffic detours will be signed.
How will construction affect me?
The contractor will make every effort to minimize the effects of the project on businesses and the public, but there will besome delays and inconveniences. To minimize impacts, businesses will be provided with temporary access ramps (to beinstalled when construction begins) and Open for Business signage. Affected businesses and the project team are exploring additional business retention ideas.
How long will construction take?
Construction is expected to last approximately 4 months. The sidewalk work is expected to proceed on one side of thestreet, then the other side. Street resurfacing will follow completion of the sidewalks.
What are the next steps?
The August 25 Open for Business kickoff news conference signals the start of the project and reminds residents and visitors that businesses will be open during construction. Many area businesses have also joined a discount couponcampaign to encourage people to visit Kenton stores and restaurants. In addition to the Streetscape project, otherimprovements in Kenton include remodeling an existing building to house a new county library branch, and the completerefurbishing of Paul Bunyan who stands tall at the entry to the business district.(Continued)
