UTILIZATION OF SEAWEED Gracilaria sp.

WASTE GENERATED FROM AGAR PAPER PROCESSING AS A BASIC MATERIAL PAPER

Abstract Paper is one of a cellulose derivative significant role in human life. The use of paper in the world today has reached a very high number. Simanjuntak (1994) in Purnawan et al. (2012) suggested 90 % of pulp and paper produced using wood as a raw material source of cellulosic fibrous material. Seaweed solid waste generated from agar paper processing has the potential to be used as pulp because of seaweed as raw material for agar paper contains high fibre. To overcome this, we must look for alternative use of forest wood as raw material pulp and paper maker. Alternative materials that can be used is seaweed waste. This research was conducted from January 2014 until April 2014. Samples of seaweed waste generated from agar paper processing obtained from Agar-Agar Paper Factory Cap Apples in the Village Mancagahar, Pamengpeuk District, Garut regency. Analysis of chemical constituents of solid waste agar paper done in Laboratory Soil Research Institute, Bogor. The experimental design used in the main research was completely randomized design (RAL). Results of chemical analysis of seaweed waste generated from agar paper processing is water content of 7.63%, protein 15.53%, 0.19% fat and 15.30% ash. While carbohydrates (by difference) amounted to 61.35% with 16.03% of cellulose, hemicellulose 25.23%, 3.16% lignin and crude fiber was 11.56%. Keywords: Agar paper, seaweed waste, fibre. BACKGROUND The paper industry is one of the largest industries in the world to produce 278 million tons of paper and cardboard, and spent 670 million tons of wood per year. Can be predicted that there will be exploitation of forests on a large scale can lead to disruption of the stability of the environment considering the trees are the lungs of the earth. Paper industry, in addition to requiring wood as the main raw material, is also classified as industrial by high levels of energy consumption and waste is quite dangerous for the environment (Ria, 2011). To overcome this, we must look for alternative use of forest wood as raw material pulp and paper maker. Alternative materials that can be used is seaweed waste by processing of agar paper. Riyanto, (2006) states in the processing of agar paper in Pameungpeuk, Garut many seaweed waste was unused by produced of agar paper.

Key of successful transformation seaweed for paper is the discovery of fibres on seaweeds. If wood had cellulose fibre, seaweed had fibre agalosa with 37 micrometres wide and 0.5-1 mm long, with high flexibility, and containing liquid adhesives substance. From the research microscope looks the size and shape of fibres agalosa more homogeneous, unlike cellulose fibres round, oval, or flattened. This homogeneity makes better paper quality, more flexible, more subtle. This is the underlying selection of seaweed waste by processing of agar paper as an alternative material to the manufacture of pulp and paper using organosolv methods with organic solvents without causing environmental pollution.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES Describe the potential of seaweed waste as the manufacture of paper. Describe the content of the seaweed waste can be used as the manufacture of paper. Use seaweed waste by processing of agar paper for base material of manufacture of paper. Creating high-quality paper and environmentally friendly.

METHODOLOGY Time and Place This research was conducted in January to April 2014 in Paper Company PT. Pura Barutama, Kudus, Central Java. For laboratory activities will be carried out in the Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology, Gulf Awur, Jepara.

Equipment and Materials The tools used in this study include scales, mixer, bucket, glass, bowl, measuring cup, eyedropper, flask, erlenmeyer, filter paper, and oven. The cooking process until the formation of the sheet using a stove electricity were, panic presto, and forming tools sheet (handsheet). The tools used in the testing of physical properties of pulp is tearing tester to establish tear resistance and tensile

tester to set the drag resistance. The materials used are waste seaweed (Gracilaria sp.) Obtained from Pameungpeuk, Garut, ethanol, and acetic acid.

Stages of Research Pulping process is done by organosolv method using organic solvent is ethanol. Dried seaweed waste put into the round bottom flask. It is added to 40 % ethanol (solution cookers) and concentrated acetic acid (as a catalyst). Comparison between the solutions of waste cooking with seaweed is 10:1, 15:1, 20:1, and 25:1 (v / w). The volume of catalyst used in each comparison is the same that is 5 mL. The solution is cooked at a temperature of 120oC for 4 hours. Pulp Pulping of seaweed waste is subsequently washed to remove residual ethanol. Then the waste pulp milled seaweed and ready to be printed. Sheet printing process begins with dilution pulp seaweed waste. By using printer paper, paper printed and pressed on the glass. The drying process is done by utilizing sunlight.
