Description

These simple cards will help you explore some of the issues around getting learners involved in a variety of issues in your college or school.

1. Make several copies of the cards and cut them up.

2. Collect together the people you want to consult. These might be staff, learners or a mixed group. (You may choose to run the session a couple of times with different groups.)

3. Split people into manageable groups (no more than 5 per group).

4. Sit each group round a table and give them a set of cards.

5. Get them to sort the cards by having a short discussion on each issue: should learners be involved or not? One the group has decided they put the issue card under the appropriate header card ('off-limits to learners' through to 'learners make the decision')

6. Get people to stand up and have a look at what others have said. Facilitate a discussion. It can be particularly interesting for groups of staff to see what groups of learners have said and vice versa.

Use these discussions as the basis for establishing an agreed student council policy and constitution.
