The theory and works ofKandinsky were concernedwith abstracted musicalforms. He describes anexperience of Wagner'sLohengrinduring the early1890's: "All my colours wereconjured up before my eyes.Wild, almost mad lines drewthemselves before me. It wasquite clear to me thatpainting was capable ofdeveloping powers of exactlythe same order as thosemusic possessed."
Kandinsky completed his first non-representational painting and histreatise On The Spiritual In Art in1910.
The Colour Organ
Synaesthesia has a long historyin human artistic endeavour.Classical Greek philosophersdebated whether colour, likepitch, could be considered aquality of music. There have alsobeen various mysticalexplorations with musical scalesand the colours of the rainbow,such as the colour-organexperiments of the Jesuit priestFr. Castel in the early 18thcentury.
