UPDATE
DENVER AVENUE
 STREETSCAPE

Recently, the Portland City Council,PDC and the Urban Forestry Com-mission adopted the recommendationsof the Downtown Kenton DenverStreetscape Plan. Construction of theimprovements is slated to begin in2009. The Plan outlines improvementsalong North Denver Avenue, fromInterstate Avenue south to WattsStreet, including widened sidewalks, street trees, lighting, benches, stormwater planters and public art.
These improvements willhelp to revitalize the historicKenton business district— fondly known asDowntown Kenton.
Now that a preferred design concepthas been selected, the team iscurrently refining the details of theschematic design through the designand engineering phase. With the help of the Regional Arts &Culture Council, artist and public artconsultant Valerie Otani was broughtonto the design team and to makerecommendations for themes, scale of public art, and potential location of artinstallations. Because downtown Ken-ton is surrounded by family housing and parks, a key conceptual element isthat the art be interactive and engag-ing, creating a family-friendly tone.To learn more about the design andconstruction process, visit with a PDCrepresentative at the Kenton Neigh-borhood Association Meeting andOpen House on June 11th. See eventdetails in calendar at left.

GET YOURCARTSA ROLLIN’
by
BRENDA RAY SCOTT
Portland’s new residential recycling system gets its carts a rollin’—recycling carts that is. Now being introduced, these new blue recycling roll carts andgreen yard debris carts will be deliv-ered by haulers in the Kenton neigh-borhood June and July.
Here’s how it works:
Customers keep one of their yellowrecycling bins to use for glass recycling.Slap a label on that says glass. Thesecond yellow bin you may keep for your own use. The really groovy newsis that you will put all the other recy-clables into the new roll cart, exceptglass and motor oil. Better yet, youcan put plastic tubs such as yogurt andmargarine containers, small plasticbuckets and plastic nursery pots intothe new cart. No need to roll out thecart every collection day if it’s not full.Don’t forget, glass goes in a separate yellow bin. Sorry, plastic bags are notaccepted at all in curbside recycling! You can still recycle plastic bags atneighborhood collection points, suchas a grocery stores or recycling centers.

Visit the websitewww.portlandonline.com/osd/carts.
The new four-bin system separates garbage, yard debris, glass and other recyclables.
KENTON CONNECTS WITH RESIDENTS
KNA INTERIM chair—
Vicky Kirk

It is my pleasure to bring you the first Kenton Connect newsletter! This is just the beginning of our effort to communicate with residents on important issues facing our community. I’d like topersonally thank the 32 Kenton Walkers who volunteered to deliver this issue to your door step— our first ever canvassing system in Kenton!
Four months ago I became the Kenton Neighborhood Association (KNA) Interim Chair. Within this time I have createda monthly resident email and increased the subscriber list from 50 to 300 residents, created the Kenton Connect quarterlynewsletter, produced a marketing campaign to support the restaurants on Denver Avenue and most importantly created theKenton Walkers delivery group—which will hopefully be my most important legacy as chair.I encourage you to peruse our summer events column, let your voice be heard at the new library site meeting May 29th, andmost importantly attend the Annual KNA General Meeting and Open House on June 11th! And please, take time to readthe “Kenton Menu” delivered with your newsletter and support our amazing new restaurants on Denver! See you soon.
