SOC 202: SOCIAL PROBLEMSFINAL PROJECT:SOCIOLOGIAL FILM RATING SYSTEM
Have you ever pondered our society's choices in what to censor and what to warn us about in filmratings? Like, why are we generally more concerned with sex in films rather than violence? And thereare other problems that don't get censored or rated at all. What about those? The Motion PictureAssociation of Americaprovides us with our standardized rating system, giving films a G, PG, PG-13,R, or NC-17, depending on how they measure up tocertain criteria. These include, but are not limitedto, language (i.e. use of profanity), nudity, sex, violence, drug abuse, sensuality, "adult activities andother elements," and--in the case of NC-17 films--"aberrational behavior." The overarching themes arelanguage, sexuality, and violence. This is the Triad of Evils; the three things we most need to shelter our kids from. Or are they? What if the triad were sexism, racism, and heteronormativity? Or someother social problems? What would the ratings system look like then? And how would the movies getrecategorized to fit these new criteria?
THE PROJECT:
You will put together and try out a
new
rating system. Your assignment is to review the Motion PictureAssociation of America's descriptions for each rating level. You will work individually to come up witha new system based on sociological concepts. You must include
any
5 social problems from thereadings
in your new rating system. Devise a way to break down each concept into
G, PG, R, andNC-17 levels
. For example, what would be R-level racism? And how do you balance these five social problem ratings to come up with a single, unified rating system combining all of them?
YOU WILL TURN IN*:
(1)A blank worksheet raters can use to rate a movie using the 5 social problems you chose

don't forget to include a spot to list movie, year, director/producer, short description, name of reviewer, and other info you think is pertinent)(2)A copy of your worksheet, filled out using your all-time favorite movie(3)A 3(ish) page paper describing your rating system

: how did you determine the rating levels? Describe each level; use the MPAA ratingdescriptions as a guide – you can make this like a handout

: what movie did you select? How did it stand up to your new rating system? What is your ultimate feeling about this system? Does it work? Better than MPAA's system?
