essay 2: arguing your case

For our second essay, you are going to write
two separate persuasive compositions
arguing either side of atopic of your choice. Your topic can be a major political or social issue or a smaller, more personal opinion.But you must be able to effectively take both sides – even if you may not personally agree with one of them.Regardless of what topic you choose, you must be able to research
that will back up yourpoints. This evidence must have some quantifiable or authoritative substance to it; avoid baseless opinionsand unverifiable arguments from nobody online weirdos. For both essays, you also must provide a smallsection for equal time; know what your opponent says and be able to clearly explain his side of the dispute –before you make your own, more powerful points.We will discuss two organizational ideas in class:

If you break any of these rules, 10 pts. will be subtracted from your grade.
Do not use “you” or “your.”
You need distinct introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs.
The last sentence of the introduction should set up the order and examples of your essay.
Underline that thesis.
Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence (this can follow the transition) that sets up what is to come. Then, the last sentence of each paragraph should wrap-up what you just discussed.
Begin your body and conclusion paragraphs with transitions that make smooth bridges between paragraphs.

You will need at least one solid quote to back up each point you make in your essays. These quotes can be statistics ortestimonies from authorities on your subject.
