Vanderhoef awards block grants to municipalities, community groups
$560,000 in federal stimulus funds awarded for downtown renewal, social services

Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef today awarded a total of $562,845 infederal stimulus funding to villages and not-for-profit organizations in Rockland through the County’sOffice of Community Development.The grants were awarded to municipalities, groups and agencies that provide social services,housing, and revitalization and improvement programs for Rockland residents in lower-to-moderateincome brackets. The funds are provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,CDBG-R Program.Some of the projects funded under the federal stimulus block grants have previously been funded byCD block grants.“These are cases where the federal stimulus program will make a real difference, in the neededrevitalization of Rockland’s downtowns and providing housing and services for people in need,”Vanderhoef said. “We are proud to support our villages and the community organizations that aid ourresidents every day.”The following municipalities and organizations will receive stimulus block grants:
United Hospice of Rockland, Inc. - Hospice Home
$125,000 -
Demolition of an existingstructure to clear the land for the construction of a hospice home in the Town of Clarsktown.Funds will assist in the development of a 10-unit affordable housing unit for United Hospice fordisabled adults that do not have the ability to remain in their homes due to illness.
Village of Haverstraw -
Downtown Revitalization - $100,000 –
Coupled with a previousannounced CDBG award of $100,000, this project is for planned streetscape improvements inthe eastern-most section of the business district below Broadway including new sidewalks,curbs, roadway, lights and other improvements along Main Street from First Street toBroadway. The proposed improvements will consist of:
Approximately 41 new lights
New sidewalks, crosswalks, roadway, granite curbing
Parking meters, waste containers
New trees, tree grates and landscaping
