After the school-based of observing teachers using ICT in their teaching, we have another

assignment that is, we were asked to teach ICT using virtual manipulative. We in a group
of 3 chose Sekolah Rendah Sengkurong to do our assignment.

For the introduction, the teacher asked if they know about ‘fractions of unlike
denominators’ to see how far their prior knowledge about this topic. Then my colleague
use the virtual manipulative from the website of National Library of Virtual
Manipulatives.

Teacher interacts with the pupils the addition of unlike fractions by showing of how to
make the denominators become equal with the help of the pupils itself. She used several
examples for the introduction from the easier questions to the hardest. The pupils seem to
understand and enjoy the lesson using this virtual manipulative. My colleague also asked
volunteers to come to the front and show their friends how to solve the problem.

As there are only 10 computers available in the ICT room with a pupils of 31, so we have
to divide the pupils into 4 big groups. Then we asked them to try to solve the questions
on the computer by discussing among themselves about the answers.

After 10 minutes, we asked them to divide themselves into a smaller group of 3-4 pupils.
Here, the pupils have the opportunity to solve at least 1 question per pupil. I observed
some of the pupils still do not know how to solve the problem, so their friends will tell
what to do by giving instructions. They seem to focus on the diagram in solving the
problems.

And for the assessment, we gave them 5 questions and the pupils solve the problem
individually. This is to find out whether our lessons successful or not. They were given
about 5 minutes to answer all the questions without using the virtual manipulative,

After marking the paper, I found out that only 1 pupil get 5 marks, 4 pupils get 4 marks, 5
pupils get 3 marks and 2 pupils get 1 mark, while the rest of 13 pupils did not score
anything.

This shows that our lesson is unsuccessful due to some factors. The first factor is about
the limited time as we feel rushing in doing this lesson and the pupils have limited
opportunity to solve the problems due to this, which make them do not see the important
rule in solving the unlike fractions.

We should do this school-based assignment for 2-3 times to the same subject or give them
a post test first in order to see their misconceptions then we make an intervention before
giving them the pre test again. The intervention will include the use of virtual
manipulative in focusing the right way of finding the equal denominators.
