want
a
story
aboutIndia?
Well,
hereyou
are.
On
the
occasion
Ihavein
mind
a
numberof
us
were

gathered
attheresidenceof
a
friend,justoutsideCal
cutta.
Things
were
quiet.The
evening
was
 hanging '.when
all
of
a
sudden
Doris,
a
gayandvivacious
little
blonde,
newly
married
to
an
officerofthe
garri
son,took
advantage
of
a
rather
longer
lull
thanusual
in
the small''
conversa
tion
to
voice
a
complaint:
 I
thinkIndia
is
slow
she
asserted. When
I
decided
tomarryTed
and
come
outhereI
thought
I
should
bein
for
all
kinds
ofadventures-and
not
a
thing
has
happened
yet
that
might,
not
have
happened
in
London
Really,
I'm
terribly
disappointed
Ah
put
in
a
young
engineer.
 If
you
want
adventures,
Mrs.
Dane,
you'll
have
to
get
across
the
Frontier.
You
know
what
theysay-'over
the
Frontier
anything
may
happen'
And
it
does Thanks cried
our
host,
suddenly. You'vegiven
mean
idea,Stretton 'OvertheFrontier,'you
say-well,
there
aremore
tnanone,
youknow There
is,
for
instance,
thefrontierof
knowledge,
and
reason,
andnatural
things-andsometimes,
for
a
little
while,
one
gets
over
that What
I
mean
is
this-here
are
we,
sittinghereand
strivingvainly
to
get
a
arid
thing
that
may
give
it
to
lis
we
haven't
triedyet I
mean
ghost-stories.Now.hasanyone
got
a
real
ghost
storythey
can
tell
us? Doris
clapped
her
handswith
a
little
squeal
ofdelight.
 Oh,
lovely-lovely
sheexclaimed. Come
on,
somebody-a
nice,creepyone
Please Ratherto
our
surprise
itwas
Sallon,
the
hunter,
who
volunteered:
 Ithink
I
can
tell
you
one
that
iscreepy,
as
you
call
it,
enough
hesaid,

creepy,
as
you
call
it,
inhislow,
even
tones. And
itis,
in
allits
more
essentialfacts,
a
true
one.
But
I
warn
you,
beforehand,
that
I
have
no
explanations
to^offer,
nor
am
Ipre
pared
to
give
any
opinion
upon
it.
Howmuchyoubelieveofthe
story
told
me
by
Sakhirestsentirely
with
you.
Now,
if
youwill
excuseme
for
a
few
moments,
I
will
get
some
papersconnectedwiththe
case
from
my
bagupstairs
.
When
he
returned
wesaw
thatthe
 papers
consistedonly
of
an
ordinarystenographer'snotebook,
which,
how
ever,
Sallonheld
as
though
itwere
some
thing
rather
precious-or
dangerous.
Thestory,he
commenced,
concerns
inthemainthree
people-Ralph
Pindar,
who,
as
some
ofyoumay
remember,
had
a
reputation
asa
hunter,
hiswife,'and
Sakhi,
who
was
his
servant.
Astothe
origins
of
this
man
Sakhi,
I
know
little.
I
donot
even;
knowfor
certain
hisnationality,but
probably
he
was
Afghan.
Certainly
he
wasa
Ma
hommedan.
I
hadbeenhomefor
a
while,
tosettle
gome
family
business.

Andwhen
I
came
backI
was
astoundedandshocked
tohearthatPindar
was
dead-killed,
inhis
own
bedroom,
by
a.
tiger
Further,
his
beautifulyoung
wifehad
completely
disappeared,
andSakhi
was
in
prisonserving
a
sentence
for
havingattempted
toshoot
Mrs.
Pindar,
some
shortwhile
prior
toher
husband's
tragic
death .The
whole
affairseemed
pretty
mys
terious
tome,andI
obtainedpermis
siontointerview
Sakhi,
so
that
Icouldhearwhateverhe
might
have
tosayaboutthematter.
They
told
me
he
was
incorrigibly
sullen,
and
would
notsay
a
word.
But
I
fancied
he
might-to
me.
For
we
had
been
comrades
oil
many
a
shikari,andIhadsavedhis
life
onone
occasion,
andhemine
on
another.Suchincidents
produce
a
sympathy
betweenmen,entirelyirrespectiveofcolor.
