C, of S., G-3 434 Infantry Division The observations contained herein are submitted for the benefit of staff officers and commanders who one day may be faced with the problem of moving a major force from island to island in the presence of the eneny. is placed on reality. Since this movement is the first of its kind, the rule-book was compiled as the mve- ment progressed, The experiences gained should be note- re fie P om Task Foree 31 be : Ade ines, egies on 10 February, 1943. The componente, which up to that time had fe seen nor heard of one another were as follows: 43d Infantry Division (less one Regimental Combat Team) 3d Marine Raider Battalion Acorn (Red) 3 (A Naval Ground Force designed to construct and operate a small air base) 10th Defense Battalion (A Marine Corps Unit designed to furnish ‘AA and limited ground protection for an air field) 17th Field Hospital 35th Naval Construction Battalion ilarine Air Group 21, Ast Platoon, Co, "D", ehrth Signal Battalion (One complete RADAR, 270) ‘The mission of this Task Force was as follows? 1, Occupy the RUSSELL ISLANDS (a strategically significant group about thirty-five miles NORTHVEST of CAPE ESPERANCE, GUADALCANAL). 2, Deny the area to the enemy. 3. Establish a staging point for landing craft preliminary to further forward movement, 4. Establish an advanced motor torpedo boat base. 5. Establish an advanced air base. The first elements, consisting mainly of Infantry Battalion Combat Teams aboard transports, left NOUMEA for GUADALCANAL, 13 February. This leg of the journey was a typical water movement, and except for one large scale torpedo plane attack, was uneventful. Throughout the four-day trip, combined Aray, Navy and Marine Corps staffs aboard the flagship, drew the detailed plan for ‘the subsequent phase, the movement from GUADALCANAL to the RUSSELL ISLANDS, The first echelon landed at GUADALCANAL with the aid of amphibious landing boats from the transports and the base, There is no dock at GUADALCANAL, An average of 8 craft per transport completed the unloading in 10 hours, Dumps were established in dispersed locations on shore opposite the transport area, and troops were bivouaced near their dumps, prepared for prompt reloading aboard landing craft. Dumps initially consisted of the following: 5 Units of Fire, all calibers 15 Days "BY Ratdons 10 Days "O" Rations 5 Days "D" Rations 30 Days Class IIT (Motor vehicles and boats) 30 Days Class II and JV Limited Unit Inpdlinenta iinc}uding-approxinately 50% heavy canvas and cote; 10% motor ‘les, mt tion: equipnent, 1002 tet Gochafobesy ; ga in 7 Reloading aboard emall landing craft commenced innediately upon com pletion of unloading. (Subsequent echelons at this tine were loading in HOMME, or were enoite). The following types of craft were cuplored for the 8 et Destroyers Tank Lighters (Lem) Ramp Lighters (icv) Personnel Boats eat Landing Craft Tank (LOT, Landing Ship Tank (ist) Flattop Barge (700 tons on deck) PAB Barge (700 tons below deck) ‘The destroyers used were of three classes: DD, which is a canbat destroyer} DMS, which is a mine sweeper; and APD, which is a personnel carrying destroyer. ‘The destroyer has a capacity of 200 men and twenty-five tons of equipment. If no troops are carried, the destroyer is capable of carrying 175 drums of gaso- Line or fifty tons of ammunition or rations, ‘The LCT is an open ramp boat with a capacity of 160 tons. It has 1750 square feet of available floor space, and a four-foot freeboard, In this operation the average load was 150 tons, or 1,000 square feet of loaded vehicles, and 5,000 cubic feet of varied equipment, This craft can ley its ramp on shore in one foot of water at the bow, The LST is a ship with two decks, connected by an elevator. ‘Like the other craft of the Task Force, it has a bow ramp. This vessel carrics thirty to forty cargo trucks and fifty smaller vehicles. Fifteen hundred drums of fuel ofl can be loaded on the lower deck, This vessel requires four feet of water at the bow, and ten feet at the stern. ‘The barges were employed chiefly for the transportation of Marston Mat (for air field), ammunition, and fuel drums, A crene is part of the standard equipment for the barge, and is indispensable in handling the typical barge loads, This vessel may be placed near enough to the shore in quiet water, so that the crane can normally deposit the load on land, The first echelon departed GUADALCANAL 20 February. This force consisted of one Regimental Combat Team (less one Battalion Combat Team), 34 Marine Raider Battalion, forward echelon of Division Headquarters, forward echelon of Division Artillery Headquarters, Division Reconnaissance Troop (two platoons), and forward echelon of Division Signal Company. Equipment, supplies and per sonnel were conbat loaded aboard landing craft in twenty-four hours. As the various craft were loaded, they rendezvoused off the beach position under pro- tection of the force destroyers, Personnel were retained ashore for labor until all cargo was aboard, except in the case of LOT!s whose troops boarded after loading cargo, Normally, fifty men can load an ICT efficiently, part- deularly if the load is combat (vehicles, guns, ammunition, rations, etc.). However, if the load is nade up entirely of small-piece cargo, such 2, . rations or ammunition, 100 men 9 ‘150 men as passengers beside the load. Each LCT carried atout The loading of the smaller craft LOM's, etc.) was accomplished after the LOT's had been loaded. This took about one hour per small boat. The last to be loaded were the destroyers. Personnel who were to be transported aboard destroyers rode the cargo load to the destroyer in small boats, transferred the loads over the side by hand, and then went aboard for movement, The destroyers so equipped (APD's) hoisted their landing craft to the davits, and were ready to move. At 2300, 20 February, the force moved out, Bight destroyers of various types towed the small landing craft, each with its prescribed load, Twelve LCT's followed. The flat-top barge, loaded with 700 tons of ammunition and barged wire followed, towed by a tug. An air and surface vessel screen had been put out to support and cover the movement, Intelligence indicated that few if any Japanese occupied the RUSSELL GROUP. No eneny was contacted during the movement or the subsequent landing. ‘The force arrived at the destination at dam, Just prior to daylight, the force divided to permit landing at two different beaches, in compliance with the tactical plan of seizing the main objective, BANIKA ISLAND (see at— tached sketch). The destroyers prepared their boats for prompt landing, and as soon as the anchors were dropped, troops went over the side, and were carried ashore in landing waves. All personnel had been assigned to boats and missions, in compliance with Amphibious Doctrine, The LCT!s followed closely behind the first wave, and started unloading as soon as the ramps were dropped. Beach heads had been established to a depth of approximately 500 yards when the LOT!s arrived. Motorized patrols followed by foot troops male ‘a hasty reconnaissance of the island which is about 50% jungle, and 50% cocoa~ nut grove. Details left to handle cargo completed unloading the LCT's ani destroyers at 1000, and these vessels promptly withdrew to GUADALCANAL, The barge, after being towed ashore by LOM's, remained throughout the day, and unloading was completed at, 0200 the following morning. The movement of the Task Force continued for fifty days. Subsequent echelons were considerably smaller than the first, since half of the water ‘transportation was loading at GUADALCANAL while the other half was unloading in the RUSSELLS. Normally, four to six LCT loads made up each daily echelon. Boats were loaded during daylight; five to seven hours was needed for the loading, ‘The island of PAVUVU was occupied by the 3d Marine Raider Battalion, which subsequently was withdram, ani a Reginental Conbat Team. Naval. and Marine forces arrived at BANIKA, and rear echelon elenents gradually came forward. Inmedistely upon completion of initial troop movements, attention was devoted to the establishment and maintenance of 60-day levels of all supplies. Actually 110 days' supplies were required, to make up for consumption during the movenent period, Ten unite of five were, transported: for all weapons, a : tft 3 ey except anti-aircraft Le sported. Lower priority vehicles and equipment were £ - quantity of im pedimenta incident to the construction of an Air Base was transported, Each echelon was carefully laid out, indicating in detail equirment, cargo and troops to be moved by each craft, The greater part of the transfer was accomplished by LCT's, Labor companies of 150 effective Army personnel were established in permanent camps near each beach. These troops augnented the troops aboard the LOT!s to handle unloading as successive echelons arrived. All shipments except the first arrived during the hours of darkness, and generally were cleared by 0700. The detailed planning of echelons should allow flexibility for mechanical breakdown and enemy action. By the time all echelons had closed, the air base was sufficiently operative to accommodate the Marine Air Group, complete anti-aircraft and shore defenses had been established, the islands and adjacent islands had been ‘thoroughly reconnoitered, a motor torpedo boat base had been established, performing regular patrols, two RADAR units were operating for the defense of the South Pacific area, and beach and dock facilities sufficient to accom modate transports had been constructed. The following is a recapitulation of the employment of boats during the operation: DD LC «LCV «LeP LcT LST BARGE 43a Inf, Dive ay 100 1525103, 7 5 3d Marine Reider Bn. 4 Acorn (Red) 3 33 1 4 0th Defense Bn. 302) OB lst Platoon, 579th Signal Bne 2 17th Field Hospital 2 35th Naval Construction Battalion 8 Marine Air Group 21 3 1 2 ‘The following notes are the product of careful study, and in some cases trial and error, They may be of value. 1, Make preliminary practice loadings and landings under conditions approximating those of the objective, 2, Aerial photographs are almost a necessity. 3, Every possible measure should be taken to determine the marine hazards of the destination, Information secured by Intelligence from natives and local whites, if any, will be of great value in selecting the lantings for email bosts, Coral patches are a serious hazard to the laniing craft. 4, A thorough and energetic supervision should be exercised over the handling of supplies and equipment, Apparently, the imminence of eneny contact is inversely propgrtionate to the consideration of property. G-h's have noticed that proj i a ‘Strange tgwrain, blackout condi- tions, unfamiliarity with ships ‘bs a joni with adjacent units - PE bide take te Se Ghway j a2 contrite to dent at all dumps, at all times, during ¢ pas sheuly Jo misinterpreted; pro- perty is frequently misdirected by mistake rather than by theft). 5. At least 25% of all rations transported will be lost, largely through the effects of sea and weather on canned goods and bagged components, such as flour and sugar. The cases and containers for rations are not con- structed to meet the requirements of repeated handling with limited facilities for storage and preservation, 6, Before a unit leaves the States, crates and boxes should be constructed for all impedimenta, This does not mean the usual hasty crate or carton, Sturdy reinforced boxes built by skilled technicians, reinforced with hardware, and furnished with carrying devices will pay their way many times. 7. In planning the forward movement of troops, retain enough in the rear base to handle the loading of the balance of cargo. Gradually work the rear troops forward as the labor requirements diminish, 8. Establish provisional labor companies for handling cargo, as soon as the beach head is established, Do not depend on intermittent details, or the passenger troops. 9. Unload craft rapidly, Devote all energy to accomplishing the unloading, and let dispersion wait until the boats are clear; the boats are @ more renumerative target than a pile of rations. 10, Use dim, colored Lights at night for the LOT's to guide on as ‘they approach the beach, If the LCT does not land perpendicular to the shore, it may not be able to get off and land again with its load, and unloading, particularly in the case of vehicles, will be extremely difficult, 1. An artillery battery with three units of fire can be transported in two LT's having with it its prime movers, guns and necessary commmication equipment, This does not include all vehicles of the battery, but allows enough transportation for the initial employment of the battery. 12, An infantry battalion combat team with five units of fire, fifteen days' rations, and high priority impedimenta can be transported in four destroyers and four LCT's, 13. 4n ICT will carry 175 tons of rations or 700 drums of gasoline. 14, ‘The equipment to be loaded should be placed on the beach at the loading point the day before the loading. 15. Be prepared for sudden changes of plans in the landing. Waves of troops will not always land where they should, Companies may become mixed and the heavy weapons may not be there when they should be. Battalion com nanders should be ready to make rapid reorganisation of their strength, without halting the forward movement. Expressive of this is to sh EE 4 {cht ilps ey biabe Beach, The first wave had just landed. riod warded cautiously near the beach, Brigadier General Wing, Assistant Division Com -—— peste re ete py mere qnead?hy Os Ee Wade a thtac’ #obeive, and they haven't mander, who had ac Conmander, "Why don't} quietly to the Company "Well, landed yet." "No reserve? Well, that's all right, Captain, go ahead. I'm here." The third platoon was hung up on a coral niggerhead fifty yards from shore. 16, Treasure your road net, if any. It will break down in 48 hours of cargo hauling unless traffic is strictly controlled, and the road mintained from the start, 17. Cocoanut groves make good concealment for bivouac areas. 18, Americans have yet to leam how to deal with natives. They should be respected and ignored, their villages should be put off limits, and their services secured only under exceptional circumstances end then by an experienced representative. 19. ‘he principjes of combat are just the same as they ever were, The book is still right. Island warfare differs only in that your lines of conmnication for supply and evacuation are a little mre precarious, So are the enemy's. 20, Engineer road equipment should be in the first echelon to conmence road building and road repair inmediately.
